The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is the most academically demanding pre-university qualification taught at scale globally. Students take six subjects (three Higher Level, three Standard Level), complete the Theory of Knowledge essay, write a 4,000-word Extended Essay, and log 150+ hours of Creativity, Activity, Service over two years — while every subject also carries an Internal Assessment worth ~20% of the final grade. The cognitive load is higher than most national A Level systems precisely because the IB rewards breadth alongside depth.
What makes IB tutoring distinct is the Internal Assessment. A strong IA can lift a borderline-6 to a 7; a weak IA can drop a strong-6 to a 5. Most schools provide limited individual coaching on IA topic selection, exploration techniques, and reflection — which is where one-to-one tutoring delivers outsized value. Our tutors coach the full IA cycle from idea generation to final-draft polish, alongside exam paper technique for the May and November sessions. The result is consistently higher 7s in HL subjects and stronger total IB scores — typically 38+ for our students, the threshold that unlocks Oxbridge, Imperial, Ivy League, NUS, and McGill offers.
Students take six subjects (three at HL, three at SL) plus three core requirements: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). The Diploma is scored out of 45 — 42 from the six subjects (each on a 1–7 scale) plus up to 3 bonus points from TOK + EE combined.
3 at HL (240 hrs each) + 3 at SL (150 hrs each), one from each of the six IB groups (Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, The Arts).
1,600-word essay + oral presentation on how knowledge is acquired and validated across disciplines.
4,000-word independent research paper in a subject of the student's choice.
A required portfolio of extracurricular activities — non-graded but required for the Diploma.
Each subject has a teacher-graded internal component (typically 20% of the final mark) that's externally moderated by the IBO.
42 from six subjects (1–7 each) + up to 3 from TOK and EE. Pass mark is 24. Top universities typically ask for 38–42+.

Higher Level (HL) subjects run 240 teaching hours over two years with extended exam papers — three at HL Maths/Physics/etc., versus two at SL (150 hours). Universities typically want 6/7 in HL subjects related to the intended degree. For example, an Engineering offer commonly asks for 6 or 7 in HL Maths + HL Physics. SL subjects matter for breadth (and the Diploma score out of 45) but matter less for degree-specific admission criteria.
Each of the six subjects scores 1–7 (total 42). Up to 3 bonus points come from a matrix combining Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE) grades. Maximum total: 45 points. The pass mark is 24, but top universities ask for 38–42+ with specific HL grades. A 45/45 is exceptional — fewer than 0.5% of candidates achieve it globally.
Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches (AA) is the proof-led, pure-mathematics route required by virtually all top university Maths, Engineering, Physics, and Computer Science programmes. Mathematics: Applications & Interpretations (AI) is statistical/modelling-led and fits Business, Social Sciences, Architecture, and Design pathways. Each runs at HL and SL. AA HL is the most demanding and the most universally accepted.
Two main sessions: May (the larger, used by Northern Hemisphere schools — UK, US, Europe, UAE, Singapore) and November (Southern Hemisphere schools — Australia, Argentina, etc.). Students sit all final exams within a 2–3 week window. Re-takes are possible at the next session.
Top UK universities (Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Warwick) publish equivalent IB requirements — typically 38–42 points with 6/7 in HL subjects. Most US selective colleges value the IB Diploma's breadth highly; Ivy League admits look favourably on strong IB scores. The choice between IB and A Levels is mostly about student fit (breadth-loving vs. specialist-focused) rather than admission outcomes.
Yes — these are often the weakest-supported components in schools and the biggest sources of stress for IB students. Our IB tutors coach TOK essay framing and prompt selection, plus full Extended Essay structure (research question, methodology, source quality, reflection). The combined TOK+EE bonus is up to 3 points — a meaningful lift for borderline 38/39 students.
