Cambridge IGCSE Business (0264)

IGCSE Business, applied to the case.

Both papers reward answers about the business in front of you, not business in general. Your tutor helps you apply each idea to the case, then reach a decision you can justify.

A café sells 2000 meals a month. Its break-even output is 1500 meals a month. Calculate its margin of safety.[2 marks]

This is worth 2 marks. They go for:

  • Margin of safety = actual output − break-even output (1 mark)
  • 2000 − 1500 = 500 meals a month (1 mark)

Examiner tip: Give the unit. If the next question asks what it means, say sales could fall by 500 meals a month before the café makes a loss.

Where marks are lost

Common Cambridge IGCSE Business mistakes

  • Answering about business in general.

Use the case: its name, its products and the numbers in the appendices. A point that would fit any business earns fewer marks.

  • Treating profit and cash as the same thing.

A profitable business can still run out of cash. Profit is revenue minus costs; cash flow is about when money comes in and goes out.

  • Stopping before the decision.

Questions that ask you to justify or recommend need a clear choice, the reason it beats the alternative, and what it depends on.
