IB DP Chemistry is required for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Science, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, and Chemical Engineering applications at virtually every UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, and US university that admits IB students. Medical schools at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh, NUS, NTU, and HKU list Chemistry HL as standard. The IB's organic chemistry, equilibria, and physical chemistry content matches A Level depth, with extra emphasis on environmental and analytical chemistry topics that A Level boards cover more lightly.
IB Chemistry HL is content-heavy and IA-heavy. Students need command of organic reaction mechanisms, equilibrium and thermodynamics calculation chains, and analytical-technique interpretation (NMR, IR, MS). Paper 2 long-answer questions reward students who write coherent reasoning chains with correct terminology; partial answers cost disproportionately. Paper 3 (Section A data analysis + Section B Option) requires distinct preparation. The 10-page IA — an experimental investigation worth 20% of the grade — is the largest single lever for moving a 6 to a 7. Tutors coach the full HL Chemistry arc plus the IA.
IB DP students choose Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL) for each subject. HL is 240 teaching hours with extended exam papers; SL is 150 hours with a lighter exam load. Both include the Internal Assessment.
240 teaching hours · extended exam papers · IA
IB Chemistry HL = 3 papers totalling 4.5 hours plus the IA. Paper 1 (40 marks, 1h) is 40 multiple choice covering all content. Paper 2 (95 marks, 2.25h) is short + extended response on core + AHL. Paper 3 (45 marks, 1.25h) covers Section A (data analysis from real experimental data) + Section B (chosen Option topic — Materials, Biochemistry, Energy, Medicinal Chemistry, or Environmental Chemistry). HL covers 11 core topics + 10 Additional Higher Level (AHL) topics + 1 Option.
150 teaching hours · shorter exam load · IA
IB Chemistry SL = 3 papers totalling 3 hours plus the IA. Paper 1 (30 marks, 0.75h, multiple choice). Paper 2 (50 marks, 1.25h, short + extended response). Paper 3 (35 marks, 1h, Section A data analysis + Section B Option). SL covers the 11 core topics + 1 Option but not AHL. Roughly two-thirds the scope of HL.
The Chemistry IA is a 6–12 page individual investigation worth 20% of the final grade. Students design and conduct an experiment, collect quantitative data, analyse with appropriate error propagation, and reflect on methodology. The strongest IAs combine a tractable chemistry question (e.g. how concentration affects reaction rate, with controlled variables) with rigorous experimental design and explicit error treatment. Common pitfalls: choosing questions where the chemistry is too thin (cookery-related rate experiments tend to score lower), insufficient uncertainty calculation, or weak evaluation. Tutors coach the full IA from topic ideation to final polish.

Most UK medical schools require Chemistry HL or accept SL with a strong overall IB score (37+). Singapore (NUS, NTU), Hong Kong (HKU), Canadian (McGill, Toronto), and most Australian medical pathways prefer HL. US universities admitting IB students typically expect HL Chemistry for pre-med pathways. When in doubt: take HL. The exam load is heavier but the admissions pathway is broader.
Schools choose the Option for the whole class. The five Options: A. Materials (polymers, catalysis, nanotech), B. Biochemistry (proteins, enzymes, metabolism), C. Energy (thermodynamics, electrochemistry), D. Medicinal Chemistry (drug design, action), E. Environmental Chemistry (atmospheric, water, soil). Biochemistry is most popular at medical/pre-med-focused schools. Materials is popular at STEM-heavy schools. Tutors coach whichever Option the school covers.
Organic mechanism drawing — curly arrows, intermediate carbocations/carbanions, electrophilic addition, nucleophilic substitution, condensation reactions — is the single highest-leverage Chemistry topic to tutor. Students consistently move from 50–60% to 80%+ on Paper 2 organic questions once mechanism intuition clicks. Typically 6–10 focused sessions across Year 1 and Year 2.
Universities accept both as equivalent — Imperial Chemistry asks for 7 in HL Chemistry OR A* in A Level Chemistry. IB Chemistry has stronger environmental/analytical chemistry coverage; A Level has slightly deeper organic mechanism work. The IB IA component (10 pages of primary experimental work) is sometimes valued in research-track applications. Total exam time is similar across both qualifications.
IB DP Chemistry tutoring at Tutopiya typically ranges from S$60–180/hr in Singapore, £30–90/hr in the UK, $60–200/hr in the US, and AED 150–400/hr in the UAE. HL pricing typically sits 10–20% above SL. IA coaching billed at the same hourly rate. The free trial is genuinely free.
