Outline how the structure of DNA allows it to be copied accurately.[3 marks]

This is worth 3 marks. They go for:

  • Bases pair in a complementary way: adenine with thymine, cytosine with guanine (1 mark)
  • The hydrogen bonds between bases are weak enough for the two strands to separate (1 mark)
  • Each strand acts as a template for a new strand (1 mark)

Examiner tip: “Outline” means a brief account. Make each mark point once and move on.

Where marks are lost

Common IB Diploma Biology mistakes

  • Describing when the question says explain.

“Describe” wants a detailed account. “Explain” wants reasons or causes. Check the command term before you start writing.

  • Writing that organisms adapt on purpose.

Natural selection works on variation that already exists: better-suited individuals survive and reproduce more, passing on their alleles.

  • Data answers without values.

When you analyse data, quote figures with their units, and compare them, rather than describing the shape in words alone.
