Expand and simplify (2x + 3)(x − 4).[2 marks]

This is worth 2 marks. They go for:

  • Expand all four terms: 2x² − 8x + 3x − 12 (1 mark)
  • Collect like terms: 2x² − 5x − 12 (1 mark)

Examiner tip: Count your terms before simplifying. Two brackets of two terms give four terms, and a missing one costs both marks.

Assessment

How Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9–1) Mathematics is assessed

Three papers, each worth a third of the grade, all taken at the same tier in the same series. Foundation tier covers grades 1–5 and Higher tier grades 4–9. A Higher student a few marks below grade 4 can be awarded a 3.

Specification 1MA1, first examined in 2017. Reformed GCSEs are planned for first teaching from 2029, so exams in 2027 and 2028 use this one.

Where marks are lost

Common Pearson Edexcel GCSE Maths mistakes

  • Squaring a negative on the calculator.

Type (−3)² with brackets, which gives 9. Without them, −3² gives −9, because the calculator squares first.

  • Dividing by the new value for percentage change.

Percentage change = change ÷ original value × 100. A price that rises from £40 to £50 has gone up by 25%, not 20%.

  • Writing 1 h 30 min as 1.3 hours.

Minutes are sixtieths of an hour: 30 minutes is 0.5 h, and 1 h 30 min is 1.5 h. Convert before using speed = distance ÷ time.
