How is the summary in Paper 1 (Question 3a) marked?

Here’s what examiners look for:

  • You summarise Text B, about 550–600 words long, in continuous writing of no more than 150 words
  • 10 marks are for reading: finding and using the points the question asks for
  • 10 marks are for writing: putting those points concisely, clearly and in your own words

Examiner tip: List the relevant points first, then write them up as a paragraph. Copying whole sentences from the text costs writing marks and words.

Where marks are lost

Common Cambridge O Level English mistakes

  • A summary in note form, or over 150 words.

The summary must be continuous writing of no more than 150 words. Cut examples and repetition, and combine related points into one sentence.

  • Copying the texts in directed writing.

Use, develop and evaluate the ideas in the texts, in the form and voice the task sets, such as a speech or a letter. Lifting sentences shows little.

  • Letting a description turn into a story.

If you choose a descriptive composition, build atmosphere, detail and sensory images. A plot with events belongs in the narrative option.
