What’s the difference between the directed writing task and the composition?

Here’s what examiners look for:

  • Directed writing: you respond to the texts you’re given, in a set form and for a set audience, such as a letter or a speech
  • Composition: you write your own descriptive or narrative piece
  • Both are marked on the quality of your writing; directed writing also rewards how well you use the ideas in the texts

Examiner tip: In directed writing, develop and judge the ideas in the texts. Copying them out doesn’t show understanding.

Where marks are lost

Common Cambridge IGCSE English mistakes

  • Retelling the passage in the language question.

Pick precise words and phrases, then explain the effect of each one. Summarising what happens doesn’t answer the question.

  • Copying whole phrases into the summary.

Use your own words where you can. Lifting the text shows less understanding than putting the ideas concisely yourself.

  • Forgetting the audience in directed writing.

Keep the voice, register and purpose the task sets all the way through, whether it’s a letter to a newspaper or a speech to students.
