Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1)

Edexcel IGCSE Maths, Foundation or Higher.

Both 4MA1 papers allow a calculator, so the marks are in setting the problem up and showing it. Your tutor checks each line and makes sure you use your calculator well.

$2000 is invested at 3% compound interest per year. Work out its value after 4 years.[3 marks]

This is worth 3 marks. They go for:

  • Use the multiplier 1.03 (1 mark)
  • Value = 2000 × 1.03⁴ (1 mark)
  • = $2251.02 (1 mark)

Examiner tip: Type the whole calculation in one go. Rounding after each year changes the final answer.

Where marks are lost

Common Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Maths mistakes

  • Using the wrong bound.

For the largest possible value of a ÷ b, use the upper bound of a and the lower bound of b. Think about what makes the answer biggest.

  • Reading the bar height as frequency on a histogram.

Histograms on the Higher papers plot frequency density. Frequency = frequency density × class width.

  • Keeping the same denominator “without replacement”.

If items aren’t replaced, the total on the second branches of a tree diagram is one less, and so is the number of the item already taken.
