Cambridge O Level Mathematics (Syllabus D) (4024)

O Level Maths, with and without a calculator.

Half your marks come from a paper with no calculator, so number skills matter as much as methods. Your tutor works through 4024 questions line by line and checks each step, so you keep the method marks.

Free plan. Use your Tutopiya account or Google.

Without a calculator, simplify √50 + √18.[2 marks]

This is worth 2 marks. They go for:

  • √50 = √25 × √2 = 5√2 and √18 = √9 × √2 = 3√2 (1 mark)
  • 5√2 + 3√2 = 8√2 (1 mark)

Examiner tip: Look for the largest square factor of each number. Surds are on the syllabus from 2025, so expect them on Paper 1.

Common Cambridge O Level Maths mistakes

  • Using 3.14 for π.

Use the π button on your calculator or 3.142, as the syllabus says. 3.14 can push a 3-significant-figure answer off by one in the last digit.

  • Not flipping the inequality sign.

When you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a negative number, reverse the sign: −2x < 6 gives x > −3.

  • Measuring bearings the wrong way.

Bearings are measured clockwise from north and written with three figures, such as 045°. Draw a north line at the point you’re measuring from.
