Cambridge O Level Computer Science (2210)

O Level Computer Science, from binary to pseudocode.

Paper 1 asks how computers store, send and protect data. Paper 2 asks you to design and trace algorithms. Your tutor explains the theory, checks your pseudocode and lets you find your own bugs.

Free plan. Use your Tutopiya account or Google.

A system uses even parity. Describe how a parity check finds an error in a byte after transmission.[3 marks]

This is worth 3 marks. They go for:

  • Before sending, the parity bit is set so that the byte has an even number of 1s (1 mark)
  • The receiver counts the 1s in the byte it receives (1 mark)
  • If the count is odd, an error has occurred and the data can be sent again (1 mark)

Examiner tip: Know the limit too: if two bits change, the count stays even and the error isn’t found. That’s why a parity block check exists.

Assessment

How Cambridge O Level Computer Science is assessed

There are no tiers. Everyone takes both papers, each worth 50%, and can get grades A*–E.

Syllabus 2210, for exams in 2026–2028. A revised syllabus starts in 2029, with Python as the only programming language.

All students

  • Paper 1: Computer Systems

Short-answer and structured questions on topics 1–6, no calculator

    Time
    1 h 45 min
    Marks
    75
    Weight
    50%
  • Paper 2: Algorithms, Programming and Logic

Short-answer and structured questions on topics 7–10, ending with a 15-mark unseen scenario question, no calculator

    Time
    1 h 45 min
    Marks
    75
    Weight
    50%

There is no coursework. Programming is tested in the written Paper 2, where you answer in pseudocode; only the scenario question also accepts Python, Visual Basic or Java.

Where marks are lost

Common Cambridge O Level Computer Science mistakes

  • Answering in Python outside the scenario question.

Paper 2 wants pseudocode. Answers written in a programming language get no marks, except in the 15-mark scenario question at the end.

  • Running out of time for the scenario question.

Cambridge expects about 30 minutes on it. Plan the inputs, processes and outputs before writing, and leave that time free.

  • Truth tables with missing rows.

Logic circuits have up to three inputs, so a full truth table has eight rows. List every combination from 000 to 111 in order before working out the output.

FAQ

Cambridge O Level Computer Science questions, answered.

Yes. Paste your pseudocode and your tutor traces it with you, line by line, and points you to the error rather than fixing it for you.

Yes. The Databases topic includes reading and completing SQL scripts with commands such as SELECT. Ask your tutor for a table and some queries to try.

No. These details are for exams in 2026–2028. From 2029 the syllabus is revised, with Python only and renamed papers, so check which version your school is teaching.
