Watch a tutor work through a question.

The essentials
How AQA GCSE works
- Grading
- 9 (highest) to 1. AQA describes grade 4 as a standard pass and grade 5 as a strong pass.
- Tiers
- Maths and the sciences have Foundation (grades 1–5) and Higher (grades 4–9) tiers. English Language isn’t tiered.
- Exam series
- Every May and June. Maths and English Language can also be taken in November by students aged 16 or over.
Required practicals
Each science has required practicals that every student carries out: 10 in Biology, 8 in Chemistry and 10 in Physics. They aren’t marked separately, but exam questions based on them make up at least 15% of the marks. Your tutor can walk you through the method, variables and results for each one.
