Why H1 General Paper tutoring matters

General Paper (GP, 8807) is the H1 subject required by nearly all JC students and watched closely by universities — Oxbridge, NUS Law, NUS Medicine, and most UK Russell Group programmes require B grade or higher in GP. Many JC students who comfortably score A's in their H2 sciences struggle to lift GP above C/D because the assessment isn't about content recall — it's about argument quality, evidence use, and evaluation. Schools cover GP collectively in large groups, leaving little time for individual essay feedback (the highest-leverage tutoring intervention).

Our GP tutors are based in Singapore and have NIE / ex-MOE backgrounds with proven track records of moving students from C/D to A/B. They drill Paper 1 essay technique (thesis structure, evidence selection, evaluation, balanced rebuttal), coach the Paper 2 Application Question (AQ) using examiner-grade frameworks, and provide line-by-line feedback on essay drafts under exam conditions.

H1 General Paper tutoring — common questions

What is General Paper (GP) and why does it matter so much?

GP is an H1-level critical-thinking and essay-writing subject required by nearly all JC students. Universities — Oxbridge, NUS Law, NUS Medicine, UK Russell Group, US selective colleges — all check the GP grade as evidence of writing ability. Most universities require at least C6 in GP for entry; top programmes want B3 or higher. A poor GP grade can blow up an otherwise strong 4-H2-A profile.

How is GP structured?

Two papers: Paper 1 (Essay, 1.5 hours, 50 marks, 50%) — students choose 1 of 12 essay prompts covering global + Singapore issues (politics, technology, environment, ethics, science, education, arts). Paper 2 (Comprehension, 1.5 hours, 50 marks, 50%) — non-fiction passage with comprehension + summary + Application Question (AQ).

What's the Application Question (AQ) and why is it hard?

The AQ (~10 marks in Paper 2) asks students to evaluate the views in the passage against Singapore's context — agreement / disagreement with structured reasoning. Many students lose marks because they restate passage points without genuine evaluation. We coach the AQ framework: clarify the view → state your stance → provide Singapore-specific evidence → evaluate strength of argument.

How should we prepare for the Paper 1 essay?

Read widely (Economist, Straits Times, BBC, Channel News Asia), build a tutor-curated bank of contemporary examples organised by topic (technology, ethics, environment, society), practice essay outlines weekly, then full timed essays bi-weekly with detailed feedback. Strong GP scores come from the example bank quality + argument structure, not from memorising 'good' phrases.

When should we start GP tutoring?

JC1 students benefit from starting in March-April once they've had a few GP lessons in school — the standard schedule covers ~10 essay prompts across JC1 + JC2. JC2 students intensify in the lead-up to prelims (June-August). Most strong students do 1 session/week through JC2.

What does an online GP tutor cost?

Live pricing is shown in the tutor cards above. GP rates in Singapore typically range from SGD 80-200/hr for online sessions depending on tutor experience. The free trial is genuinely free, no card required.
