Why JC tutoring is different

Singapore JC is one of the most academically demanding pre-university programmes in the world. Students compress two years of A-Level content depth while juggling 4 H2 subjects (each ~6 contact hours weekly), H1 General Paper, Project Work, plus university applications. The path to NUS Medicine, NUS Law, Oxbridge, or Imperial typically requires 3+ H2 distinctions — meaning that even strong O-Level students often feel the step-up in JC1.

What separates effective JC tutoring is the application focus. Most JC content is conceptually similar to a competitive global A-Level, but the question style demands rigorous application — multi-step calculations, mathematical proofs, free-response evaluation, and the dreaded H2 Sciences Paper 4 (practical). Our tutors don't teach you content already covered in class — they teach you the technique, the time management, and the examiner-mind that turns a B into an A. Pre-prelim coaching in JC2 is when most families intensify; the prelim grade often dictates university predicted-grade letters.

JC / Singapore A-Level tutoring — common questions

What is the Singapore Junior College curriculum?

Singapore Junior College (JC) is a two-year pre-university programme (JC1 + JC2) for students who scored well at O-Levels. JC leads to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level, a joint qualification recognised globally. Students take 4 A-Level subjects: typically 3 H2 (standard content load) + 1 H1 (lighter load) + General Paper (GP, H1) + Project Work (PW). H3 subjects are advanced enrichment for top students.

What's the difference between H1, H2, and H3?

H1 (Higher 1) is a lighter-content version of a subject — about half the H2 syllabus, taken alongside 3 H2 subjects to give breadth. H2 (Higher 2) is the standard A-Level content load — required for any subject your child plans to read at university. H3 (Higher 3) is an advanced enrichment paper — taken by elite students alongside H2 in the same subject. Universities almost exclusively look at H2 grades for subject prerequisites; H3 is a quality signal.

Why is JC so academically intense?

JC compresses two years of A-Level depth into a tight schedule — typically with promotional exams at end of JC1, prelims in mid-JC2, then A-Levels in October-November of JC2. Top JCs (Raffles, Hwa Chong, ACSI, NJC, VJ) push students toward 4 distinctions (4 H2 As) for Medicine, Dentistry, Law, and competitive university degrees. The contact hours per subject (~6 per week at H2) are roughly double O-Level intensity.

Which JC subjects do you tutor?

We focus on the highest-impact H2 subjects: Mathematics (9758), Physics (9749), Chemistry (9729), Biology (9744), and General Paper (8807). H1 versions of the same subjects share most content; tutors cover both. We can also coach H3 enrichment for elite students aiming for the top university programmes.

How important is GP (General Paper)?

GP (8807) is H1-level and required by nearly all JC students. Many universities — including all UK Russell Group, top US colleges, NUS Medicine, Law — require at least a C6 in GP for entry. Top universities (Oxbridge, NUS Law) often want B or higher. GP is also where weaker students lose their fourth distinction — meaning a poor GP grade can blow up an otherwise strong A-Level profile. One-to-one GP coaching is one of the highest-ROI investments in JC.

What university grades do JC subjects need for top NUS/NTU programmes?

NUS Medicine: 4 distinctions (4 H2 As) + strong GP + interview. NUS Law: 3 H2 + H1 GP at A grade. NUS Computer Science: H2 Math A + H2 Physics or Computing. NTU Engineering: H2 Math + 2 H2 Sciences. NUS Business: H2 Math + GP A. UK Russell Group typically wants AAA/AAB. The Singapore-Cambridge A-Level is recognised globally — we coach for both Singapore and overseas university outcomes.

Are your tutors Singapore-based, NIE-qualified, or ex-MOE?

Yes — our JC tutors are based in Singapore. Many have NIE qualifications, ex-MOE teaching credentials, or PhDs from NUS/NTU in the subject they teach. Online tutoring lets your child access top-tier Singapore JC tutors regardless of school or physical location.

What does an online JC / H2 tutor cost?

JC tutoring rates in Singapore typically range from SGD 80-200/hr for online sessions, depending on tutor experience (NIE-qualified teacher, ex-MOE / JC teacher, PhD subject specialist). Our pricing is shown live per tutor — the free trial is genuinely free, no card required.
