Pearson Edexcel International A Level Mathematics tutoring for Edinburgh students
Edinburgh's mainstream secondary system uses SQA Highers and Advanced Highers — so Edexcel IAL students in Edinburgh are typically at independent schools offering A Levels as an alternative (Fettes College, George Watson's, Edinburgh Academy, Loretto, Merchiston Castle) or international students relocating from Edexcel IAL-pathway schools abroad. Some sixth-form retake candidates and homeschool students also choose Edexcel IAL for the modular re-sit flexibility. Our online tutors in GMT/BST deliver YMA01 lessons across Morningside, Stockbridge, Bruntsfield, Murrayfield, and Marchmont.

Pearson Edexcel · qualification code YMA01 · Modular specification
AS Level (Year 12)
Pearson Edexcel International AS Mathematics is modular: typically P1 + P2 + (S1 or M1 or D1). Three units sat at AS level worth 50% of the full A Level.
Full A Level (Year 13)
Full Edexcel International A Level Mathematics totals 6 units: P1, P2, P3, P4 plus two applied (M1/M2/M3, S1/S2/S3, or D1/D2). Modular structure means students can re-sit individual units to improve grades.
Exam series
Two exam series each year: January and June. Modular re-sits are a key Edexcel IAL advantage - failed or low-graded units can be resat without retaking the whole A Level.
Grade boundaries
Grade A* on the full A Level requires an overall A plus 90% averaged on the three A2 papers (P3, P4, and one applied A2 unit). Boundaries vary per series.

Do Edinburgh schools teach A Levels rather than SQA Advanced Highers?
Scotland's mainstream system is SQA Higher / Advanced Higher — most Edinburgh schools follow this. A Levels (including Edexcel IAL) are offered at independent schools serving British-international families or students aiming at non-Scottish universities. Schools include Fettes College, George Watson's, Edinburgh Academy, Loretto, and Merchiston Castle.
Is Edexcel IAL accepted by University of Edinburgh and other Scottish universities?
Yes — University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde, Glasgow, St Andrews, and other Scottish universities accept Pearson Edexcel International A Levels alongside SQA qualifications. Cambridge IAL and Edexcel IAL are equally well-recognised by Scottish admissions tutors.
How does Edexcel IAL Maths compare to SQA Advanced Higher Maths?
Both target similar university-readiness standards. SQA Advanced Higher has stronger applied/investigative emphasis; Edexcel YMA01 has the strict modular Pure / Applied unit split with January + June session flexibility. Universities accept both equally. Students transferring between systems typically need 4–6 sessions of adaptation.
What does an online Edexcel IAL Maths tutor cost in Edinburgh?
