Pearson Edexcel International A Level (IAL) is the most modular of the four A Level boards. Subjects are typically structured as 6 separate units that can be sat across January and June exam sessions, with individual units re-takeable to improve grades. This makes Edexcel IAL the most flexible option for students managing exam stress, transferring between schools, or balancing A Level work with university entrance test preparation. The qualification is taught at British international schools across the Middle East, South Asia, and increasingly in the UK private candidate / sixth-form-college sector.
Universities globally accept Edexcel IAL with the same UCAS points as UK domestic A Levels (A* = 56 points). Every UK Russell Group and most international universities — Singapore (NUS, NTU), Hong Kong (HKU), Canada (McGill, Toronto, UBC), Australia (Go8), and US institutions — publish equivalence tables. The modular re-sit option is particularly valued in markets where students take 4 or 5 A Levels alongside SAT/ACT/IELTS preparation (UAE, India, Pakistan, Singapore). Our online tutors deliver Edexcel IAL-specific lessons across all 5 Wave 1 subjects with January and June series preparation.

Pearson Edexcel offers two distinct A Level products. Edexcel A Level (sometimes called Edexcel Pearson A Level) is the UK-domestic linear qualification sat by students at UK sixth forms — 3 papers at end of Year 13, no modular structure. Edexcel International A Level (IAL) — covered on this page — is modular, with 6 units across January + June sessions. The two have identical UCAS recognition but different exam structures. International students typically take IAL; UK domestic students typically take the UK Edexcel A Level (or AQA/OCR).
Edexcel IAL subjects are typically 6 units — 3 at AS (Year 12) and 3 at A2 (Year 13). Each unit is a separate paper sat at January or June. Students can mix sessions: sit some units in January, others in June, or all in June. Individual units can be retaken to improve grades — the highest mark on each unit counts toward the final A Level. The full A Level award is the weighted aggregate of all 6 units.
A* requires Grade A overall (typically 80% averaged across all units) PLUS 90% averaged on the three A2 units. The 90% A2 threshold is the sharpest discrimination — many students achieve overall A grades but miss the A* because A2 averages fall in the 85–89% band. Tutors focus heavily on the A2 papers (units 4, 5, 6 for sciences; units 3 + 4 for some subjects) in the months before the A2 exam session.
Yes — this is one of Edexcel IAL's defining advantages. Students can plan exam timing across both sessions, sit some units in January to reduce June workload, or resit weak units the session after the original sitting. Most schools structure the course so AS units are done by June of Year 12, with A2 units in January + June of Year 13. Some Year 13 retake candidates spread their A2 units across both sessions.
Yes — every UK Russell Group plus the wider sector. UCAS treats Edexcel IAL as equivalent to UK domestic A Levels for points and grade-mapping. Oxbridge accept Edexcel IAL with the same A*/A grade requirements. Some Oxbridge colleges occasionally publish board-specific guidance for Maths and Engineering applications, but the qualification itself is fully accepted.
