Cambridge International A Level — the most globally accepted pre-university qualification

Cambridge International A Levels (CAIE) are taught in over 10,000 schools across 130+ countries and accepted by every UK Russell Group university plus 1,400+ universities in 195 countries. The qualification is particularly dominant at British international schools in the UAE, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Kenya, and increasingly across Africa and Latin America. Universities in the US, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia all recognise CAIE A Levels with published equivalence tables.

What distinguishes Cambridge A Level is the modular structure: students take AS-level papers in Year 12 (typically Paper 1 + Paper 2 + Paper 3) and A2-level papers in Year 13 (typically Paper 4 + Paper 5 for sciences, Paper 4 alone for many humanities). Modules can be resat across the May/June and October/November exam series. This makes the qualification more forgiving than UK domestic A Levels (AQA, OCR) which are now linear. Our online tutors deliver CAIE-specific lessons across all five Wave 1 subjects — syllabus-aligned, with focused Paper 4 and Paper 5 (sciences) coaching for the A2 papers where the A* threshold lives.

FAQs — Cambridge International A Level tutoring

Is Cambridge International A Level the same as Cambridge A Level (UK)?

There is no separate 'UK Cambridge A Level' — Cambridge is a strictly international qualification (CAIE). In the UK, the three A Level boards are AQA, OCR, and Pearson Edexcel. International students sometimes hear 'Cambridge A Level' used interchangeably with CAIE — that's correct. Cambridge IAL (sometimes called CIE A Levels in older materials) is the only Cambridge-branded A Level qualification.

Is Cambridge A Level accepted by UK universities?

Yes — every UK university including Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, all Russell Group, and the wider sector accepts Cambridge International A Levels on equal footing with UK domestic A Levels. UCAS points map identically (A* = 56, A = 48, B = 40). Some Oxbridge colleges publish CAIE-specific guidance for high-competition courses like Maths and Engineering, but the qualification itself is fully accepted.

How does the modular structure work?

Cambridge A Level subjects are typically structured as AS (~50% of A Level, sat at end of Year 12) + A2 (the other ~50%, sat at end of Year 13). Within each level, there are multiple papers — e.g. Physics has Paper 1 (multiple choice), Paper 2 (AS theory), Paper 3 (AS practical), Paper 4 (A2 theory), Paper 5 (A2 planning-analysis-evaluation). Students can sit modules at May/June or October/November sessions and re-sit individual papers to improve grades. The final A Level grade is a weighted aggregate of all papers.

What's the A* threshold on Cambridge A Levels?

A* requires the A grade overall PLUS 90% averaged on the A2 papers (the harder, end-of-Year-13 components). For Sciences this typically means Paper 4 + Paper 5; for Maths it means Paper 3 + the chosen applied A2 module; for Languages it varies by subject. The 90% A2 threshold is the sharpest discrimination in CAIE grading — typical A2 boundaries: A* ≈ 80% on the paper itself, but you need 90% averaged across A2 to clear the A* threshold overall.

Can I retake a Cambridge A Level paper?

Yes — modular structure makes Cambridge IAL the most retake-friendly A Level option. Individual papers can be resat at the next exam series (May/June ↔ October/November). The highest mark counts toward the final A Level grade. Resits are particularly useful for students who underperformed on a single AS paper (Paper 2 or Paper 3) and want to clean up before the A2 papers.

How much does an online Cambridge A Level tutor cost?

Cambridge International A Level tutoring at Tutopiya typically ranges from £25–80/hr in the UK, S$60–180/hr in Singapore, and AED 120–400/hr in the UAE. Depends on tutor seniority, subject, and package size. The free trial is genuinely free — no card required.
