What is the Singapore Primary curriculum and PSLE?
Singapore Primary covers Primary 1 to Primary 6 (ages 7-12), set by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and assessed by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). All Primary 6 students sit the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) — a high-stakes national exam covering English, Mathematics, Science, and Mother Tongue (Chinese/Malay/Tamil). How does the new PSLE scoring system work?
PSLE uses Achievement Level (AL) banding (1 = highest, 8 = lowest) per subject. Total PSLE score is the sum of AL scores across the four subjects (range: 4-32, lower is better). Top secondary schools require PSLE scores of 4-8 (mostly AL 1s and 2s). The AL system replaced the older T-score in 2021 to reduce score-chasing pressure.
