The IB Middle Years Programme isn't another exam-driven curriculum dressed up - it's a fundamentally different learning model. Students don't sit traditional end-of-year exam papers; they're assessed against four criteria per subject (A-D, banded 0-8), each measuring a distinct skill: subject knowledge, inquiry/investigation, communication of findings, and reflection on real-world impact. Most schools spend limited individual time coaching students on what each criterion actually rewards - which is exactly where one-to-one tutoring delivers outsized value.
For Years 4-5 students especially, three pressure points dominate: the Personal Project (a Year 5 capstone worth significant ATL skill credit), the optional Year 5 eAssessment (on-screen exams that universities are starting to recognise), and the transition into IB DP. Our MYP tutors work backwards from each - mapping current topic coverage to DP prerequisites, mentoring Personal Project topic selection through to written reflection, and building criterion-specific skills (especially Criterion B - Inquiry, and Criterion D - Reflection) where students typically lose the most marks.
