Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610: Complete Guide to Papers, Core/Extended & Revision
Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610: Your Complete Guide
Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610) develops understanding of living organisms and practical skills. This guide covers Core vs Extended, which papers you sit, practical options, and how to prepare.
What is IGCSE Biology 0610?
0610 covers cells, organisation, nutrition, respiration, reproduction, ecology, and inheritance. It is widely used for entry to A-Level, IB, and science degrees.
Papers you need to choose
You choose one level:
- Core (grades C–G): Paper 1 (multiple choice), Paper 3 (theory).
- Extended (grades A*–D): Paper 2 (multiple choice), Paper 4 (theory).
You also take Paper 5 (practical) or Paper 6 (alternative to practical). Your school decides which. You cannot mix Core and Extended.
Calculator use
Calculators are allowed where calculations are needed (e.g. magnification, percentages). You must show working. Biology 0610 is less calculation-heavy than Physics or Chemistry but still uses numbers and graphs.
How hard is 0610? Is it popular?
- Difficulty: Extended is demanding: long-answer questions, application, and data interpretation. Core is less demanding but caps at C. Practical or Paper 6 tests technique and observations.
- Popularity: 0610 is one of the most popular IGCSE biology codes globally.
Top revision tips for 0610
- Practise past papers for Paper 2/4 and your practical option (5 or 6) under timed conditions.
- Learn key terms and definitions — many marks depend on precise biological language.
- Revise diagrams — labelling and explaining structure (e.g. heart, leaf, eye) come up often.
- Practise practical-style questions (variables, safety, conclusions) if you take Paper 6.
