Academic Reading structure
| Passage | Typical style | Time budget |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Accessible academic topic | ~17–20 min |
| 2 | More technical | ~20 min |
| 3 | Longest, most abstract | ~20–23 min |
Total: 40 questions. No extra transfer time on computer; on paper, write answers as you go.
Skim vs scan
| Technique | When to use |
|---|---|
| Skim | Matching headings, overview questions — first/last lines, paragraph openings |
| Scan | Names, dates, numbers, words from question stem |
| Close read | T/F/NG, Y/N/NG, precise gap-fill — only the relevant lines |
Do not close-read all three passages — you will run out of time.
Vocabulary without a dictionary

School English helps: IGCSE English and Cambridge A Level English 9093 build this habit before IELTS — prep after IGCSE/A Level.
Question-type priority under time pressure
- Do question types you are strongest at first within each passage if the format allows jumping (computer often does).
- Tackle matching headings early while paragraph memory is fresh.
- Leave tricky multiple choice for a second pass if flagged.
