Cambridge vs Edexcel IGCSE: What Online Tutors Need to Know Before Listing Either
Cambridge vs Edexcel IGCSE is one of the first decisions an international tutor faces, and families notice if you get it wrong. Both boards offer International GCSEs in the same subjects, but they differ in paper structure, tiers, grading and question style, and in where their students live. This guide is for tutors deciding which board to list, or whether to list both. It compares the two boards from a tutor’s point of view, shows where demand on Tutopiya comes from, and explains how to move from one board to the other.
Key takeaways
- Cambridge IGCSE (Cambridge International) and Edexcel International GCSE (Pearson) cover similar content but use different papers, tiers and mark schemes.
- On Tutopiya, Cambridge IGCSE draws the larger share of trial requests. Edexcel demand clusters in the Gulf.
- List the board you know. Add the other only after practising its papers.
- Families check that you know their child’s exact board, tier and paper.
- Tutors who can teach both boards are matched with more students.
What’s the difference between Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE?
Cambridge IGCSE is set by Cambridge International, part of the University of Cambridge. Edexcel International GCSE is set by Pearson. Both are international versions of the UK GCSE, taken around age 16. For a tutor, the main differences are how each subject is tiered, how many papers students sit, whether practical skills have a separate paper, and how grades are reported.
| Cambridge IGCSE | Pearson Edexcel International GCSE | |
|---|---|---|
| Awarding body | Cambridge International | Pearson |
| Tiers | Core and Extended in many subjects | Foundation and Higher in some subjects; many sciences are untiered |
| Grades | A*–G, with 9–1 versions of some syllabuses | 9–1 |
| Sciences | Multiple choice, theory and practical (or alternative-to-practical) papers | Written papers, with practical skills assessed in them |
| Maths calculator use | One non-calculator paper per tier | Calculator allowed on both papers |
| Exam series | June and November (plus March in India) | May/June, with January and November series for some subjects |
Check each subject’s current syllabus on Cambridge International’s IGCSE pages and Pearson’s International GCSE pages.
Where does demand for each board come from?

Cambridge IGCSE led the most-requested subjects: Maths (90), Physics (61), Chemistry (47) and English Language (41), mainly from Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE and Kenya. Edexcel IGCSE was strongest in Maths (32), Chemistry (23) and Physics (20), with the UAE the largest single source of Edexcel students.

How to move from one board to the other: step by step
- Download the specification for your subject from the second board and list topics that are new, missing or tested differently.
- Compare paper structure. Note tiers, paper lengths, calculator rules and how practical skills are assessed.
- Do two recent papers under timed conditions and mark them against the official mark scheme.
- Read an examiner report. It shows where students on that board lose marks.
- Update your profile to name the board, tier and subject precisely, for example “Edexcel International GCSE Maths A, Higher”.
- Prepare one trial plan specific to the new board, using its question style.
What families expect you to know about their board
Parents rarely ask about curriculum theory. They ask practical questions:
- “Do you know the Extended paper?” or “Have you taught Higher tier?”
- “Can you help with the alternative-to-practical paper?”
- “My child sits in November. Can you plan around that?”
- “Which past papers should we use?”
A tutor who answers these confidently in the first five minutes of a trial usually wins the student.
How to describe your board on your Tutopiya profile
Parents filter and scan quickly, so precise wording helps you get matched. Use the full qualification name, the tier and the subject, and say which years you’ve taught it.
| Vague | Precise |
|---|---|
| ”IGCSE Maths" | "Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580), Core and Extended, 6 years" |
| "Science tutor" | "Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry and Physics, 4 years" |
| "English" | "Cambridge IGCSE First Language English" |
| "Both boards" | "Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE Biology” |
If you list both boards, mention one thing you do differently for each, such as practising the alternative-to-practical paper for Cambridge, or the calculator-allowed papers for Edexcel Maths. It shows parents you actually know the difference.

Common mistakes tutors make with IGCSE boards
- Writing “IGCSE” with no board. Parents filter by board, so name it.
- Assuming identical papers. Same subject, different exam. Practise both if you list both.
- Ignoring tiers. Core/Extended and Foundation/Higher change what you teach.
- Using the wrong past papers. Always use the student’s board and tier.
- Forgetting the exam series. November sitters need a different revision calendar.
