What Happens If You Skip Preparation Entirely
Skipping preparation is not a catastrophe, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
Plenty of students arrive having done nothing and settle by Christmas. The cost is real but it is specific and small, and it is worth describing accurately rather than dramatically.
Here is what actually happens.
Weeks one and two: nothing goes wrong
The start is genuinely comfortable.
New folders, an introductory topic pitched so a mixed class can begin together, and content that overlaps enough with IGCSE to feel familiar. If you are on Mathematics 9709 you are into Pure Mathematics 1 immediately, and the early work is recognisable.
The timetable also looks lighter. Three subjects instead of eight or nine leaves gaps in the day, and nothing announces that those gaps are the independent study the course is built around.
Nobody who skipped the summer feels any consequence yet. That is the part worth knowing in advance, because the absence of an early signal is what makes the next bit surprising.
Week three: the assumption arrives
This is the week it costs something, and it is precise enough to predict.
Cambridge 9709 states its assumed prior knowledge plainly: IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029, plus simple manipulation of surds and the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ. Physics 9702 assumes Physics or Co-ordinated Science to IGCSE standard and prints a mathematical requirements list it expects taught inside the Physics course. Economics 9708 assumes a mathematics course rather than an Economics one.
Around week three, a lesson uses one of those things without pausing. Not as the topic — as step two of a question about something else.
If the skill is fluent you do not notice. If it is merely familiar, you spend the lesson doing the assumed part while the class moves on to the new part. Both students look identical from the front of the room.
Your teacher moves on in week four regardless, because the content has to be covered. Paper 1 alone is 75 marks across 10 to 12 structured questions in 1 hour 50 minutes, and every Pure Mathematics 1 topic must be taught before it is sat.
Week four: it compounds quietly
The gap does not stay where it started.
Surds feed into quadratics. Index laws feed into differentiation, because 9709 requires the derivative of xⁿ for any rational n and A Level questions present terms as roots and reciprocals that have to be rewritten as powers first.
So the missing skill is not one bad lesson. It is a step that reappears inside three later topics, each time costing attention that should have gone to the new idea.
This is the actual mechanism behind first-term difficulty, and it is why “work harder” is unhelpful advice. The effort is going into the right subject at the wrong layer.
Week five or six: the first mark
Then something comes back with a number on it that does not look like your IGCSE results.
Some of that is structural and would have happened anyway. A Level mark schemes are written for the end of a two-year course, so early work is measured against a standard nobody has reached yet. A low first mark is expected and is not evidence of anything.
But part of it is the gap, and the two are hard to tell apart from the outside. Which is where the genuinely expensive thing happens: a capable student concludes they have become bad at the subject, when what actually happened is that one specific technique was cold in September.
What it does not cost
Worth being equally clear about the ceiling, because the fear is usually larger than the fact.
It does not cost you the qualification. Cambridge designs a full A Level around about 360 guided learning hours, and twenty hours in August was never going to be decisive against that. Your teacher covers the content either way.
It does not put you behind your class in content. Everyone starts Pure Mathematics 1 in the same week.
And it does not compound forever. A gap identified in October closes in an afternoon or two, because the material sitting on top of it is still thin.
What teachers actually see
It helps to know how this looks from the front of the room, because it explains why nobody intervenes early.
A teacher covering Pure Mathematics 1 in week three sees a class working. Some students are quicker than others, which is true in every class in every subject. Nothing distinguishes the student doing the assumed step slowly from the student who finds the new material genuinely hard.
The signal only becomes legible when something is marked, which is usually week five or six. By then the gap has been used in two or three more lessons.
That is not a criticism of teaching. It is a structural limit: assumed knowledge is invisible precisely because it was assumed, and there is no diagnostic built into the first fortnight of most courses.
The practical consequence for a student is that waiting to be noticed is a poor strategy. A gap you can name in week two gets addressed in week two, and the way to be able to name it is to have checked the assumed list against your own work rather than waiting for a mark to reveal it.
The recovery, if you skipped it
The list does not change once term starts. It just competes with homework.
- Open the syllabus and read Previous study and Prior knowledge for each subject. Ten minutes each.
- Mark every named skill automatic, slow, or gone.
- Take the worst one and work it for forty minutes, three times this week. One skill, not all of them.
- Write full method while you do it, because 9709 gives no marks for unsupported answers from a calculator and the habit only forms through repetition.
- Tell a teacher which specific thing is stopping you. A named question gets a useful answer; “I’m finding it hard” does not.
That is a few hours, and it addresses the actual problem rather than the general feeling.
The version of this that does go badly
One case is worth separating out, because it is the situation where skipping preparation stops being a small cost.
It is not the student who did nothing. It is the student who did nothing, hit the week-three gap, drew the wrong conclusion, and then quietly disengaged.
The sequence is recognisable. A lesson stops making sense. The next one builds on it. Homework gets harder to start, so it gets started later, so it gets done worse. By half term the student has evidence that they are bad at the subject, and the evidence is real — the marks are genuinely low — even though the cause was one technique rather than any general lack of ability.
What makes this the damaging version is that it is self-confirming. Disengagement produces worse marks, which confirm the belief that produced the disengagement.
The interruption is specific rather than motivational. Find the missing skill, close it, and watch one thing become easier. Confidence follows evidence, and the evidence has to be about a particular technique rather than about the subject as a whole.
Why doing it in August is simply cheaper
The same work costs less before term because nothing competes with it.
In August the material behind you is zero, the window is empty, and the only thing you are giving up is free time you have plenty of. In October the same twenty hours compete with homework in three subjects, and the material sitting on top of the gap grows every week you leave it.
That is the whole argument for preparation, and it is an argument about timing rather than about consequences. Nothing terrible happens if you skip it. It is simply the cheapest hours you will ever spend on the subject, and they are only available once.
