Can't I Just Self-Study Over the Summer?
Yes. And a good number of students reading this should.
The material is short, the method is public, and none of it is conceptually hard. Here is the entire approach, given away, followed by the honest account of where it fails and for whom.
The whole method
Four steps. It costs nothing and takes about twenty hours across a summer.
1. Get the list. Open each A Level syllabus on the Cambridge website and find the section called Previous study or Prior knowledge. It runs to about a page.
It is specific. Mathematics 9709 assumes IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029, then names two things: simple manipulation of surds, and the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ. Physics 9702 recommends Physics or Co-ordinated Science to IGCSE or O Level standard, and separately prints a mathematical requirements list. Economics 9708 assumes a mathematics course rather than an Economics one.
2. Test each item as a step, not as a topic. This is the part people get wrong. Do not do a page of surds questions. Find questions where a surd appears in the middle of something else, because that is how A Level uses them. Mark each skill automatic, slow, or gone.
3. Work only what is slow. Three or four sessions a week, about forty minutes, one skill per session. Not a chapter. One skill.
4. Write full method every time. Cambridge 9709 expects all necessary working shown and gives no marks for unsupported answers from a calculator. A correct answer with nothing beneath it can score zero, and that habit only forms through repetition.
That is it. Start about four weeks after your last exam, stop when a skill costs you no thinking time.
Why it is not about willpower
The usual argument against self-study is that students will not do it. That is patronising and mostly wrong, and it hides the two real difficulties.
You cannot reliably grade yourself. The skill you fail to notice is, by definition, the one you do not know you are missing. Working alone you will mark yourself fluent on anything you eventually got right, when the thing that matters is whether it cost you thirty seconds.
This is a genuine measurement problem rather than a character one. It affects careful students as much as careless ones — arguably more, because a careful student trusts their own assessment.
Nothing corrects a wrong method. In August nothing is marked. You can practise a method with a small flaw in it for fifteen hours and find out in October. That is the single most expensive way to use the window, and it is invisible while it is happening.
Notice that neither problem is solved by trying harder. That is why “just be disciplined” is bad advice: discipline addresses a third problem that many students do not have.
How to work around both, alone
If you are self-studying, these are the two things to engineer deliberately.
For diagnosis: use worked solutions rather than answer keys, and judge yourself on method and speed rather than on the final number. Write your working, then compare line by line — not “did I get it right” but “did I do it the way the solution does, and did it take me longer”.
For correction: find one person who will look at three or four written answers. A teacher in September, an older student, a parent who did maths. Not weekly tutoring, just a check that your method has no systematic flaw before you rehearse it thirty more times.
Those two adjustments turn self-study from risky into reliable, and they cost nothing.
Who should genuinely do it alone
The honest picture, so you can place yourself.
Self-study suits you if your IGCSE work was comfortable rather than survivable, if you are staying on the same board so the handover is the one the syllabus assumes, and if you have a track record of finishing work nobody set.
That last one is evidence rather than intention. Did previous holiday plans actually happen? You already know the answer.
If all three are yes, you have just been handed the whole benefit for free and you should keep your money.
Who should not
Equally honest.
If you cannot tell why an answer was wrong, only that it was, self-study will rehearse the misunderstanding. That gap is exactly what another person or a marking system supplies.
If you came through IGCSE International Mathematics 0607, you used a graphic display calculator for Papers 3 to 6, and 9709 bars graphical calculators entirely along with anything doing symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration. Unlearning that under your own supervision is possible but easy to postpone, because the old habit still produces right answers at home.
And if you are moving from a national curriculum or O Level into Cambridge A Levels, the gaps are specific to your previous school rather than to a general list, which makes them much harder to find by reading a page.
What self-study looks like when it works
A concrete picture, so the plan is not just a list of principles.
A student finishes exams in mid-June and does nothing until the second week of July. Then they spend an hour with the 9709 syllabus, writing out the assumed skills: surds, index laws, rearranging, graph shapes, and the notation they have not seen.
They test each one properly — not a page of surds questions, but questions from anywhere in the syllabus where a surd turns up as an intermediate step. Three come back slow. Two are gone entirely.
That is a list of five items, which at one forty-minute session each and a few repeats is about eight hours of work. They do three sessions a week through late July and early August, writing every line of method rather than working in their head.
In mid-August they check the two that were gone, find them workable, and stop. Total: nine or ten hours, most of the summer free, and the assumed skills warm rather than cold.
Nothing in that requires a course. What it requires is the diagnostic step being done honestly, which is the part that separates students who self-study successfully from students who revise vaguely and hope.
The commonest self-study mistake
One error accounts for most of the wasted summers, and it is not laziness.
It is working the whole IGCSE syllabus again.
The logic feels sound: A Level builds on IGCSE, so revise IGCSE. In practice it is the least targeted thing available. You have just spent two years on that material and sat exams on it, and the great majority of it is either secure or irrelevant to what 9709 actually names.
The assumed list is about a page for a reason. Mathematics 9709 does not ask you to re-cover 0580; it assumes 0580 and then names two extra things — simple manipulation of surds, and the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ. That is the marginal content, and the marginal content is where the value is.
A student who works through a whole IGCSE revision guide spends thirty hours to achieve what eight targeted hours would, and usually stops before reaching the parts that mattered.
Aim narrow. The narrowness is the method, not a shortcut within it.
The middle path
If the diagnosis is the part you are unsure about, buy that and self-study the rest.

Take the list, then do the work yourself. That is a smaller purchase than a course and it fixes the harder of the two problems.
