My School Already Runs a Bridging Week. Is That Enough?
If your child’s school runs a bridging week, transition days or a summer induction, the reasonable question is whether anything else is needed.
Sometimes it genuinely is not. It is worth starting there, because plenty of families are being sold a problem their school has already solved.
What a school induction does that nothing else can
Give this its full weight before considering alternatives.
It tells you the school’s actual route. For the full A Level, Cambridge 9709 requires Paper 1, Paper 3 and Paper 5, with the last 20% coming from either Paper 4, Mechanics, or Paper 6, Probability & Statistics 2. Which one your school enters is a school decision, and no external course can tell you.
The same applies to whether the school runs a staged route with AS components at the end of Year 12, which changes what the first year is assessed on. In Literature 9695, for instance, AO5 is worth 0% at AS and 20% at A Level, so the route determines what your first year even measures.
It introduces the people. A student who has met the teacher and knows how the department works starts term less anxious, and that is not a small thing.
It sets expectations. How much independent work is assumed, what homework looks like, how the department marks. These are local facts, and local facts are exactly what a general course cannot supply.
If your child comes home from induction able to say which papers they will sit, what the teacher expects each week, and where to ask for help, that week has done real work.
The three things three days cannot do
Not criticisms of schools. Structural limits of a short group event.
Fluency. The gap that matters is not knowing surds; it is surds being fast enough to survive as step two of a longer question. Cambridge 9709 names simple manipulation of surds and the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ in its prior-knowledge statement, and turning those from familiar into automatic takes spaced repetition across weeks. It is a training effect, and three consecutive days cannot produce it however well taught.
Individual diagnosis. A bridging week teaches thirty students the same content. Their gap lists are all different, because they depend on which IGCSE each sat and which topics each avoided. A student from Additional Mathematics 0606 needs a fraction of what a student from 0580 needs, and a group session has to pitch somewhere in between.
Unlearning. If your child came through IGCSE International Mathematics 0607, they used a graphic display calculator for Papers 3 to 6. Cambridge 9709 expects a scientific calculator in every paper and bars graphical calculators along with anything doing symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration. Being told that takes a minute. Rebuilding the habit of sketching by hand takes practice.
The honest test
Ask your child two questions after the induction.
“Which specific things are you supposed to already be able to do?” If they can name them — surds, index laws, rearranging, graph shapes — the induction covered the assumed knowledge properly and you know what the list is.
“Which of those are actually quick for you?” This is the one that matters. An induction can tell a student what is assumed. It cannot tell them which items are slow, because that requires their own work being marked.
If the answer to the first is vague, the induction was orientation rather than bridging, which is fine but different. If the answer to the second is “I’m not sure”, that is precisely the gap a diagnostic fills.
What a good bridging week actually achieves
Worth describing, so the comparison is fair rather than a straw man.
The best school inductions do three things no external provider can. They tell you the department’s expectations in the department’s own words. They put a name and a face to the person you will ask for help. And they answer route questions — which papers, whether there is an AS checkpoint, how the year is assessed — that no general course can know.
Some go further and run diagnostic testing on arrival, then share the outcome. If yours does that, it has produced exactly the individual gap list that a summer diagnostic would, and you should use it rather than buying a second one.
What none of them can do is the repetition. Fluency is a training effect: a skill stops costing thinking time after enough spaced practice, and no amount of good teaching compresses that into three consecutive days.
So the fair summary is that a bridging week and summer preparation are complementary rather than competing. The week supplies orientation and information. The summer supplies repetitions. A family that has one and assumes it covers the other is the only version of this that goes wrong.
When the induction is genuinely enough
Some combinations really do need nothing further.
A student arriving from 0580 Extended who found the algebra comfortable rather than survivable, staying at the same school, on a route the induction explained, who will do a few hours of practice unprompted — that student has what they need. The syllabus page and a textbook cover the rest for nothing.
Equally, some schools run substantial programmes with diagnostic testing and follow-up work. If yours does, the sensible move is to use it rather than duplicate it.
When it is not
Three situations where a week does not close the distance.
Your child is joining from elsewhere. New school, new curriculum or new country means the assumed content was taught in a different order, possibly with different notation. Induction covers the destination; it cannot audit the origin.
The assumed skill is their weak one. An induction moves at the group’s pace. A student whose specific gap is the one thing they have always avoided will not get the repetitions they need in a shared session.
They will not follow up alone. An induction ends. If nothing is scheduled after it, the fortnight before term is where the fluency work would have happened and usually does not.
Questions worth asking the school
If you are trying to judge whether the induction covers what you need, these four get you an answer quickly.
Does it include a diagnostic, and do we see the result? Some schools test on arrival. If yours does and shares the outcome, that is the individual gap list, and you may need nothing further.
Which papers do you enter for each subject? For Mathematics 9709 the full A Level requires Papers 1, 3 and 5, with the last 20% from either Paper 4, Mechanics, or Paper 6, Probability and Statistics 2. Only the school can tell you.
Is there an AS checkpoint at the end of Year 12? This changes what the first year is assessed on, and in some subjects substantially. In Literature 9695, AO5 is worth 0% at AS and 20% at A Level.
What are students expected to do before September? If the answer is a specific list, use it. If it is “have a good rest”, that is a perfectly reasonable position and it tells you the induction is orientation rather than bridging.

Doing both, sensibly
If you use both, use them for different jobs and do not pay twice for the same one.
Take the school’s route information and expectations from the induction. Take the diagnosis and the repetitions from elsewhere — the Readiness Check in Pre-A Level Mathematics produces a report naming which sub-topics are secure and which still cost marks, which is the thing a group week cannot generate for an individual.
Then work only what the report flags. For most students that is a handful of sub-topics rather than the whole list, which keeps the total small.
