PTE Academic Format and Scoring: A Complete Guide to the Test
PTE Academic is a roughly two-hour, computer-based English test scored on a 10–90 scale. It has three parts, Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening, and many tasks are integrated: one task can count towards two skills. Every response is scored automatically, and results usually arrive within about two days, which is why PTE is popular with Australian and New Zealand visa applicants.
Key takeaways
- Three parts in one sitting: Speaking & Writing, Reading, Listening.
- Integrated tasks mean a weak skill can pull down two scores, not one.
- Scoring is fully automated, so clarity, pace and following instructions matter a great deal.
- You get an overall score and four communicative skill scores on the 10–90 scale.
How is PTE Academic structured?
| Part | Approx. time | What you do | Example task types |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speaking & Writing | the longest part | Speak into a headset microphone and type responses | Read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, re-tell lecture, answer short question, summarise written text, essay |
| Reading | about 30 minutes | Read academic texts on screen | Multiple choice, re-order paragraphs, reading fill-in-the-blanks |
| Listening | about 30–45 minutes | Listen to recordings and respond | Summarise spoken text, highlight correct summary, fill in the blanks, write from dictation |
Pearson adjusts task details from time to time, so check the current test format on the official site before you plan.
What are integrated tasks, and why do they matter?
In PTE, a single response can feed more than one score. Read aloud, for example, contributes to both Speaking and Reading. Write from dictation contributes to both Listening and Writing.
This has two consequences:
- Some tasks are worth far more than they look. High-frequency, multi-skill tasks deserve a disproportionate share of your practice time.
- Weaknesses compound. Poor spelling hurts Writing and Listening on dictation tasks.
How does PTE scoring work?
PTE is scored by Pearson’s automated scoring system, which was trained on large numbers of responses rated by human examiners. In practice, the system rewards:
- Content: did you do what the task asked, and include the key points?
- Form: word limits and structure. Going outside the required length can lose marks heavily.
- Oral fluency and pronunciation: a steady, natural pace, with no long pauses or restarts.
- Grammar, vocabulary and spelling in written tasks.
A common mistake is speaking too fast to sound fluent. Steady, clear delivery with natural phrasing scores better than rushed speech.
What does a PTE score mean?
PTE scores sit on Pearson’s Global Scale of English. For comparison with IELTS or TOEFL, use the official concordance published by Pearson and the receiving institution’s own equivalence table. Our CEFR levels explained guide shows how the framework underneath works.
How to prepare for PTE Academic in 4–6 weeks
- Week 1: take an official practice test (Pearson sells scored practice tests). Note which task types lose you the most points.
- Weeks 2–3: drill the high-value integrated tasks every day: read aloud, repeat sentence, write from dictation, summarise written text.
- Week 4: record yourself speaking and listen back for pauses and restarts. Fix the templates you rely on so they sound natural.
- Weeks 5–6: full timed tests on screen, with a headset, in a quiet room, mirroring test conditions.

How long is the PTE Academic test? +
About two hours, taken in a single sitting on a computer at a test centre or, in some countries, online at home.
What is the PTE Academic score range? +
PTE Academic is scored from 10 to 90. You receive an overall score and scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening.
Is PTE marked by a computer? +
