PMP Certification Requirements: Eligibility, the 35 Hours and the New 2026 Exam
PMP certification requirements have two parts: (1) project management education, meaning 35 contact hours of training (or an active CAPM), and (2) documented experience leading projects, with the amount depending on your education level. You then apply to PMI, may be selected for an audit, and sit a 180-question exam of about four hours. A new exam content outline took effect on 9 July 2026, and the certification renews every three years with 60 PDUs.
Key takeaways
- Education plus experience are both mandatory. There’s no PMP without real project leadership.
- The 35 hours can come from any qualifying provider, live or on demand.
- New exam from July 2026: same three domains, more emphasis on AI, sustainability and value delivery.
- If you lack experience, start with the CAPM.
PMP eligibility
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Education in PM | 35 contact hours of project management training, or an active CAPM |
| Experience | Documented months leading projects; the requirement is lower for four-year degree holders than for secondary-diploma holders |
| Experience window | PMI’s 2026 update widened the window in which experience counts and expanded recognition of apprenticeships and training |
PMI publishes the exact figures in the current PMP Certification Handbook. Read it before you start logging experience, because the rules on what counts are specific.
What counts as “leading projects”?
You don’t need the title “project manager”. Leading or directing project tasks (planning, executing, monitoring, closing) counts if you can describe it clearly. Many PMP holders came from engineering, IT, marketing, operations or construction.
The 35 contact hours
- Any provider, as long as the content is project management education.
- Live (in person or virtual) or on-demand formats have qualified.
- PMI has announced updated live training eligibility requirements from late Q4 2026, so check a course meets the rules before paying.
The application and audit
- Create a PMI account and complete the online application, describing each project.
- PMI reviews the application.
- A percentage of applications are randomly selected for audit: you submit evidence of education and supervisor-signed experience.
- Once approved, you pay the fee (lower for PMI members) and schedule the exam.
The PMP exam (from July 2026)
| Detail | |
|---|---|
| Questions | 180 |
| Time | about 4 hours, with scheduled breaks |
| Domains | People, Process, Business Environment |
| Approaches | Predictive, agile and hybrid throughout |
| Delivery | Test centre or online proctored |
The new content outline emphasises AI in project work, sustainability and value delivery. Use preparation materials updated for the 2026 outline, because older question banks may not reflect it.
How to prepare: a 10-week plan
- Weeks 1–2: read the exam content outline; map your experience to each domain.
- Weeks 3–6: study predictive, agile and hybrid approaches. Agile is a large share of the exam; see agile vs waterfall.
- Weeks 7–8: full-length timed mocks; analyse the reasoning behind wrong answers.
- Weeks 9–10: targeted review, then a final mock under exam conditions.
Renewal
The PMP is valid for three years. Earn 60 PDUs in that time (through learning and giving back to the profession) and pay the renewal fee.
Is PMP right for you?
If you lead projects now and want a globally recognised credential, yes. If you’re starting out, compare CAPM vs PMP. For agile teams, also consider the Scrum Master certification. All project and finance credentials are compared in certifications compared.
Prepare live
Tutopiya is planning a 10-week live Project Management (Agile + PMP Prep) cohort designed to contribute toward the 35 contact hours, with full mock exams and mentor review. It’s independent of PMI and isn’t running yet; PMI eligibility of the hours would be confirmed before launch. Join the PMP prep waitlist. Nothing is charged.
