Your IGCSE Syllabus Code Decides What You Need to Bridge

Two students start A Level Mathematics in the same class in September. One needs about twenty-five hours of preparation. The other needs a handful.

Neither is cleverer. They sat different IGCSEs, and the four-digit code on their statement of results decides how far they have to travel.

Find your code first

It is on your statement of results or your exam timetable, beside the subject name. For maths it will be one of these:

  • 0580 — Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics
  • 0607 — Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics
  • 0606 — Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics
  • 4024 / 4029 — Cambridge O Level Mathematics

All four lead into Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics 9709. What differs is what each one leaves you to close.

What 9709 actually names

The syllabus is specific about its starting point, and worth quoting before comparing routes.

Cambridge 9709 assumes knowledge of Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 (Extended curriculum), or Cambridge International O Level 4024/4029. It then names two additional things: candidates should be able to carry out simple manipulation of surds, and should know the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ.

Notice which codes appear and which do not. 0580 Extended and 4024/4029 are named. 0607 and 0606 are not — which does not mean they are unsuitable, but does mean the handover was not designed around them.

From 0580 Extended: the designed route

This is the path 9709 was written for, and the bridge is the standard one.

You have the content. What the A Level adds is speed and formality: the same techniques used as steps inside longer questions, plus notation you have not met and the requirement to show full method.

Your assessment habits transfer cleanly too. On 0580 Extended you sat Paper 2 with no calculator and Paper 4 with a scientific calculator, each 2 hours for 100 marks, so working without a calculator is already familiar.

Bridge: fluency in surds, index laws, rearranging, completing the square and graph shapes, plus A Level notation and method conventions. Roughly twenty to twenty-five hours.

Watch for: treating familiarity as fluency. Knowing surds is not the bar; using them without thinking is.

From 0607: the calculator problem

International Mathematics covers broadly comparable ground, and the content gap is not the issue.

The issue is equipment. On 0607 a graphic display calculator is required for Papers 3 to 6. You have spent two years with a tool that sketches curves, finds intersections and solves equations for you.

Cambridge 9709 expects a calculator with standard scientific functions in every paper, and does not permit graphical calculators, or any calculator capable of symbolic algebraic manipulation, differentiation or integration.

So a set of instincts that were correct for two years stop working. Finding where a curve crosses the axis becomes algebra rather than a menu option. Sketching becomes something you do by hand from the shape of the function.

Bridge: everything a 0580 student needs, plus deliberate practice without a graphical calculator. That second part takes repetitions rather than an explanation, because the habit is motor rather than conceptual.

Watch for: leaving it. Working at home with the old calculator still produces right answers, so the gap stays invisible until an exam where the tool is not allowed.

From 0606: the shortest bridge

Additional Mathematics is the outlier, and if this is your code the honest answer is that you may need very little.

0606 already covers ground that 9709 treats as new. Students arriving from it have typically met more of the assumed material than the syllabus expects, and a fair amount of the early Year 12 content is familiar rather than novel.

Bridge: confirmation rather than instruction. Check the assumed list, verify each item is quick, work whichever one or two are not, and stop. Well under half what a 0580 student needs.

Watch for: two opposite errors. Working the full list anyway, which spends a summer confirming what you know. And assuming 0606 covered everything, when notation and method conventions still differ.

From O Level 4024/4029

Named alongside 0580 Extended in the syllabus, so this is an equal starting point rather than a lesser one — worth saying, because students on this route often assume otherwise.

Bridge: broadly the same as 0580, with one caveat. Content ordering and emphasis can differ, so check the assumed list item by item rather than reading it as a summary and assuming your course covered it in the same shape.

Watch for: school entry thresholds expressed as grades. Those are your school’s policy; Cambridge frames prior study as a completed course and names no grade.

Four routes, one destination, and four different summers.

Two codes, same classroom

The practical consequence of all this shows up in the first fortnight of Year 12, and it is worth anticipating.

A class contains students from 0580, 0607, 0606 and sometimes 4024. The teacher pitches at the syllabus assumption, which is 0580 Extended. So the 0606 students find the opening weeks unchallenging, and the 0607 students hit an equipment problem nobody has mentioned.

Both groups can misread their own experience. The 0606 student concludes A Level is easy, relaxes, and meets genuine difficulty in Year 13 with habits built during an easy autumn. The 0607 student concludes they are struggling with the maths, when the actual issue is that a tool they relied on for two years is no longer permitted.

Knowing your code protects against both misreadings. If the first weeks feel too easy, that may be your route rather than the course. If they feel unexpectedly hard in a specific, mechanical way, check whether the problem is the calculator rather than the mathematics.

Neither realisation requires any help to act on. It just requires knowing which of the four routes you came in on.

Beyond maths

The same logic applies elsewhere, usually less sharply.

In the sciences, Co-ordinated Science is an accepted route: Biology 9700, Chemistry 9701 and Physics 9702 each recommend the subject or Co-ordinated Science to IGCSE or O Level standard. A double award is a designed path rather than a compromise.

In English, the code matters differently. Literature in English 9695 recommends a level of English equivalent to first language English at IGCSE, so a student who took English as a Second Language is starting below the standard the course is written for.

And in Economics, the relevant code is not an Economics one at all. 9708 assumes a mathematics course at IGCSE Extended or O Level standard, so your maths code determines that bridge too.

Why schools do not sort this for you

A reasonable question: if the routes differ this much, why is preparation not differentiated at school?

Mostly arithmetic. A Year 12 class contains students from several of these codes at once, plus transfers from other systems, and a teacher cannot run four parallel bridges in the first fortnight while also starting Pure Mathematics 1.

So teaching pitches at the syllabus assumption — 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029, because that is what 9709 names — and everyone else adjusts around it. A 0606 student is under-stretched for a few weeks. A 0607 student discovers the calculator change on their own.

Neither is anybody’s fault, and neither gets fixed by asking the school to do something different. It is simply the reason routing is a summer job rather than a term-time one: it is the only point at which a student is being taught as an individual rather than as part of a class.

Which is also why the audit is worth doing even if your school runs a good induction. The induction is pitched at the named route. Your code may not be it.

What to do with your code

Find it, then read the prior-knowledge page of the A Level it leads into. Mark each named skill automatic, slow or gone.

The route tells you what to expect on that list. It does not tell you what is actually on yours, because that depends on which topics you personally avoided — which is why the audit is still worth doing even when you know your code.
