IGCSE Physics Grade Boundaries 2024 — Cambridge 0625 Thresholds Explained
Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625) grade boundaries define the minimum raw marks for each grade. Knowing them lets you set precise targets, understand where you stand, and direct revision where it will have the biggest impact.
IGCSE Physics Paper Structure
Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625) is assessed across three components for Extended candidates, totalling 200 marks:
- Paper 1: Multiple choice (40 marks)
- Paper 3: Extended structured questions (80 marks)
- Paper 5 or 6: Practical or Alternative to Practical (40 marks, included in total)
Historical IGCSE Physics Grade Boundaries (Cambridge 0625)
| Year | A* | A | B | C | D | E | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 162 | 135 | 108 | 82 | 56 | 40 | 200 |
| 2023 | 158 | 132 | 106 | 80 | 55 | 38 | 200 |
| 2022 | 160 | 133 | 106 | 80 | 55 | 39 | 200 |
| 2021 | 155 | 129 | 103 | 78 | 53 | 37 | 200 |
| 2019 | 155 | 129 | 103 | 78 | 53 | 37 | 200 |
Approximate averages from Cambridge published grade threshold documents (May/June series).
Important: Paper 5/6 marks are included in the 200-mark total. Students often underestimate the practical paper — 40 marks (20% of total) can significantly shift your grade band.
Setting Targets Based on Historical Boundaries
- A:* aim for 158+ out of 200 (79%+)
- A: aim for 131+ out of 200
- B: aim for 105+ out of 200
- C: aim for 79+ out of 200
Build in a margin of 5 marks above the boundary to account for years when boundaries are higher than the historical average.
Topics with the Highest Mark Value in Physics
Always examined — high mark allocation:
- Motion, forces and energy (Newton’s laws, equations of motion, momentum, work and energy)
- Electricity and magnetism (circuits, V=IR, power, transformers)
- Waves — light and sound (reflection, refraction, diffraction, v=fλ)
- Thermal physics (specific heat capacity, specific latent heat, gas laws)
Paper 5/6 — commonly tested practical skills:
- Measuring and recording accurately (significant figures, units)
- Plotting graphs with line of best fit and calculating gradients
- Identifying anomalous results and explaining sources of error
- Describing how to improve experimental reliability
The Physics Mark-Loser: Missing Working in Calculations
Physics Paper 3 awards M marks (method marks) and A marks (accuracy marks) for calculations. You can earn M marks even with a wrong final answer — but only if working is shown.
A student who writes just “v = 24 m/s” with no working gets 0 if wrong. A student who writes “v = u + at = 0 + 4 × 6 = 24 m/s” gets the M mark even if they made an arithmetic slip.
Always: write the formula → substitute with values and units → calculate → state units on final answer.
The Mark Scheme Decoder for IGCSE Physics covers calculation technique and how to write explain/describe answers precisely.
