Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510: Complete Guide to Papers & Revision
Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510: Your Complete Guide
Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510) is for learners who use English as an additional language. This guide covers Core vs Extended, Reading/Writing, Listening, Speaking, and how to prepare.
What is IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510?
0510 develops reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English at an intermediate to upper-intermediate level. It is widely used for entry to A-Level, IB, and university, especially where English is not the learner’s first language.
Papers you need to choose
You choose one level:
- Core (grades C–G): Paper 1 (Reading and Writing), Paper 3 (Listening). Optional: Component 5 (Speaking).
- Extended (grades A*–D): Paper 2 (Reading and Writing), Paper 4 (Listening). Optional: Component 5 (Speaking).
You cannot mix Core and Extended. Most students aiming for A*–C take Extended. Speaking (Component 5) is optional and reported separately.
Calculator use
English 0510 does not use calculators. All components are reading, writing, listening, or speaking.
How hard is 0510? Is it popular?
- Difficulty: Extended is demanding: longer texts, more complex tasks, and time management. Core is more accessible but caps at C. Listening and writing are often where students focus revision.
- Popularity: 0510 is one of the most popular IGCSE English-as-a-Second-Language codes globally.
