Why a Bridging Course Stops Where the A Level Begins

Parents ask a reasonable question about bridging courses: if my child has the summer free, why not simply start the A Level early?

The answer is that the two things cover different material, and only one of them has a gap nobody else will fill.

The boundary, stated plainly

Every Cambridge A Level syllabus splits its expectations in two.

There is a section called Previous study or Prior knowledge, about a page long, which states what a student should arrive already knowing. Mathematics 9709 names IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029, plus simple manipulation of surds and the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ. Physics 9702 names Physics or Co-ordinated Science to IGCSE or O Level standard.

Then there is the subject content: the two years of material the course actually teaches.

A bridging course covers the first. The A Level course covers the second. That is the whole boundary, and it is drawn by Cambridge rather than by anyone selling preparation.

Why the boundary matters

The two bodies of material are treated completely differently once term starts.

The subject content gets taught. That is what your child’s teacher is for, across about 360 guided learning hours for a full A Level against roughly 130 for an IGCSE. It is planned, sequenced, examined and revisited.

The assumed knowledge does not get taught. It is used. A lesson in week three will lean on surds without pausing, as step two of a question about something else, and there is no remedial slot in the schedule because the syllabus already stated the assumption.

So one body of material has a professional responsible for it and the other has nobody. A bridging course exists to cover the second, and that is the only part of the summer where the work is not duplicated.

Why starting the A Level early does less than it looks

Three reasons, and they compound.

It gets taught again anyway. Cambridge 9709 Paper 1 is 75 marks across 10 to 12 structured questions in 1 hour 50 minutes, and every topic in Pure Mathematics 1 has to be covered before it is sat. Your child’s class will work through that material at the pace the paper demands, whether or not they met it in August.

The school’s route is not knowable in advance. For the full A Level, 9709 requires Paper 1, Paper 3 and Paper 5, and the last 20% comes from either Paper 4, Mechanics, or Paper 6, Probability & Statistics 2. Which one your school enters is a school decision. A student who pre-learns the wrong one has spent August on a paper they will not sit.

Unsupervised pre-learning has no correction. Nothing done in August is marked. A method learned slightly wrong is rehearsed for weeks and then has to be unlearned in September, which is worse than arriving without it.

What a bridging course deliberately leaves alone

It is worth being explicit about the things a good bridging course does not attempt, because the omissions are deliberate rather than gaps in the product.

Year 12 content. Covered above. It belongs to the teacher.

Exam technique. Knowing how your answers are read requires someone marking them against the real scheme. Before the course exists there is no marked work, so practising technique alone means rehearsing habits nobody has corrected.

Subject maturity. The way of thinking a subject rewards — judging which effect dominates in Economics, holding two interpretations at once in Literature, thinking experimentally about an unfamiliar setup in the sciences. That accumulates across two years of contact with material and feedback. No summer touches it.

A programme that claims to deliver those three before term has either misunderstood the boundary or is selling the teacher’s job back to you.

Tuition sits on the other side of the line

The distinction parents most often need is between bridging and tuition, and it is one of timing rather than quality.

Tuition runs alongside a course already underway. It follows the school’s pace, addresses problems that have already appeared in marked work, and can target exam technique precisely because there is something to mark.

A bridging course runs before the course exists. It cannot follow a pace that has not started, and it addresses problems the syllabus tells you are coming rather than problems you have observed.

Both are legitimate. They are simply not substitutes, and buying tuition in July gets you a tutor with nothing specific to work on.

What this means for the money

If you are weighing whether to pay for anything, the boundary is a useful test.

Ask what the programme covers, and check it against the prior-knowledge page of your child’s syllabus. If the two match, the scope is right and the hours should be small — roughly twenty across a summer.

If the programme’s contents look like the first chapters of the A Level textbook, you are being offered Year 12 content early. That is a real service and it is one your school provides for free, better, with the right paper choices.

The one place the line legitimately blurs

There is a category that sits on the boundary, and it is worth naming so the distinction does not sound more rigid than it is.

Some assumed knowledge is not IGCSE content at all. Notation is the clearest case: set notation, function notation and the conventions for describing intervals are used from early in Year 12 and mostly were not met at IGCSE. Strictly they are neither prior knowledge nor taught content — they are the language the teaching is delivered in.

The same applies to the method conventions. Cambridge 9709 expects all necessary working shown and gives no marks for unsupported answers from a calculator. Nobody teaches that as a topic; it is absorbed, usually by losing marks first.

A bridging course can legitimately cover both, and a good one does. They belong to the summer because they are used from day one, not because they appear on a syllabus content list.

That is why Pre-A Level Mathematics carries Mathematical Notation and A Level Method and Communication as topics in their own right. Neither is Year 12 content, and neither is IGCSE revision.

Where the line falls in practice
