The honest answer
Why our university placement is free
No consultation fee, no agent fee, no cut of your tuition. Here is exactly who pays us, how that works, and what you should check before trusting any study abroad agent — this one included.
The short version
Universities pay us a recruitment commission when a student we placed enrols. That is the whole model. It is why counselling and application support cost you nothing, and why we have no reason to charge you a fee at any point in the process.
The commission comes out of the university's own international recruitment budget. It is not added to your tuition, and your tuition is paid directly to the university at its own published international rate.
Where the money actually moves
Four points in the process involve money. You are only involved in two of them, and neither one is a payment to us.
- 1
You enquire and get counselling
You pay nothing
A counsellor works through your grades, budget and goals and builds a shortlist. Nothing is charged, and nothing is owed if you walk away here.
- 2
Your application is prepared and submitted
You pay nothing to Tutopiya
Documents, personal statement, references and submission are all handled at no cost. If UCAS or a university charges its own application fee, that goes to them, not to us.
- 3
You accept an offer and pay the university
You pay the university directly
Tuition and any deposit go straight to the university at its published international rate. The money never passes through Tutopiya.
- 4
The university pays a recruitment commission
The university pays us
After you enrol, the university pays a commission out of its own international recruitment budget — the same budget that funds its recruitment fairs and overseas offices. It is not added to your fees.
The question we would rather answer than dodge
If universities pay us, are we sending students wherever pays the most? The incentive is real, and an agency that tells you it feels no pull at all is not being straight with you. What matters is what limits it.
- The network is wide. Through our partners we reach 1,500+ institutions, so a shortlist is drawn from a broad field rather than the two or three places an agency happens to represent.
- We are paid on enrolment, not on applications. Pushing a student somewhere they will not settle, or cannot afford past year one, is worth nothing to us. Our interest and yours point the same way: a place you actually take up and finish.
- You can always apply direct. There is no contract and no exclusivity. If the best university for you sits outside our partner network, we will tell you, and applying direct is not difficult.
That last point is the real limit of a free service, so it is worth stating plainly:we can only submit applications to universities we partner with. It is a large network covering the UK, Ireland, Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the UAE, but it is not every university on earth.
What "free" does and does not cover
Our service is free. Studying abroad is not. These are separate things, and the costs below exist whether you apply through an agent, through a school counsellor, or entirely on your own.
| Cost | Who pays |
|---|---|
| Counselling and course shortlistingUnlimited sessions with your counsellor, from first call to enrolment. | Free |
| Application preparation and submissionDocuments checked, forms completed, applications submitted on your behalf. | Free |
| Personal statement and reference supportDrafting, structure and feedback until it is ready to send. | Free |
| Offer, enrolment and visa document reviewYour advisor checks every supporting document before it is submitted. | Free |
| University tuitionPaid directly to the university at its own published international rate. Tutopiya never handles your tuition and never adds anything to it. | You → the university |
| Application fees, where a university or UCAS charges oneNot all universities charge one. UK undergraduate applications go through UCAS, which does. | You → that body |
| English test feesIELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo all charge. Tutopiya students get discounted rates. | You → the test provider |
| Visa fee, health surcharge and biometricsSet by the destination country. No agent can waive or reduce these. | You → the government |
| Tuition deposit to confirm your placeMost universities ask for one before issuing the document your visa depends on. | You → the university |
Fees, surcharges and deposit amounts are set by universities, test providers and governments, and they change. Your counsellor confirms the current figures for your chosen course and country before you commit to anything.
How to check any agent, including us
Most study abroad agents are legitimate. The ones that are not tend to fail the same few checks, and every one of these takes a minute to run.
- Ask who pays them. An agent who will not answer this plainly is telling you something.
- Ask whether they charge any fee at any stage — including "processing", "documentation" or "registration" fees, which is where charges usually hide.
- Never pay tuition through an agent. It goes to the university, on the university's own invoice, to the university's own account.
- Never pay for an offer "guarantee". No agent can guarantee an admission decision, and anyone selling one is selling something they do not control.
- Do not surrender original documents. Certified copies are what an application needs; originals stay with you.
- Read every application before it is submitted in your name. You are accountable for what it says, not the person who typed it.
- Check the university's own website — many publish a list of their official representatives, and you can verify an agent against it in a minute.
Run them on us too. If an answer we give you here does not match what a counsellor tells you on a call, tell us — that is a problem we want to know about.
Questions students actually ask
Is Tutopiya's university placement really free?
Yes. Counselling, shortlisting, application support, personal statement help and guidance through offer, enrolment and visa paperwork cost you nothing. There is no consultation fee, no agent fee and no percentage of your tuition. We are paid a recruitment commission by partner universities after a student enrols. You still pay the university's own tuition, and third-party costs such as visa fees, English tests and any application fees, directly to those bodies.
How do study abroad agents make money if students pay nothing?
Universities pay agents a commission for international students who enrol, out of the same international recruitment budget that pays for overseas offices, recruitment fairs and advertising. It is cheaper for a university to pay a commission on students who actually enrol than to run its own recruitment operation in every country. This is a standard, long-established arrangement in international education, not an unusual one.
Does my tuition cost more because I applied through an agent?
No. You pay the university's own published international fee, directly to the university. Tutopiya never handles your tuition, never invoices you for it and never adds anything to it. The commission is paid by the university out of its own budget.
If universities pay you, are you just sending me wherever pays most?
The incentive exists and we would rather name it than pretend otherwise. Three things limit it in practice. Our partner network runs to more than 1,500 institutions, so a shortlist is drawn from a wide field rather than a handful of places. Commission is paid on enrolment, so placing a student somewhere they will not settle or will not complete is worth nothing to us. And you are free to apply direct at any point — if the best university for you is outside our network, we will say so.
What is the catch?
The honest one: we can only submit applications to universities in our partner network. It is a large network, but it is not every university in the world. If your best-fit university is not in it, applying direct is straightforward and we will tell you so rather than steer you somewhere else. Beyond that, there is no fee, no contract, no obligation and no penalty for changing your mind.
Do I have to use Tutopiya for my visa or accommodation too?
No. Visa document review and accommodation help are offered because they are the stages students most often get wrong, but nothing is bundled and nothing is conditional. You can use one part of the service and not another.
