UCAS Tariff Points exist to give universities a common reference point when comparing students from different educational backgrounds. A student with three A-Levels, an IB Diploma and a BTEC can all be assessed on the same scale. However, the Tariff is a guide — not a guarantee. Many of the UK's most selective universities (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL for some courses) do not use UCAS Tariff Points at all in their offers. They set specific grade conditions (e.g. A*AA at A-Level or 38 points at IB).
For the majority of UK universities and degree programmes, UCAS points are a useful screening tool. The university-specific entry requirements — and whether your qualification type is accepted — always take precedence over your raw points total. Use this calculator to understand where your points sit, then verify the exact requirements for every course on your UCAS application.

UCAS Tariff Points are a numerical score used by UK universities and colleges to compare students' academic achievements across different qualifications. They allow admissions teams to assess A-Levels, IB Diplomas, BTECs, Scottish Highers and other qualifications on the same scale.
A wide range of qualifications count towards UCAS Tariff Points, including A-Levels, AS-Levels, IB Diploma (full and individual subjects), BTEC Nationals, Scottish Highers, Scottish Advanced Highers, Cambridge Pre-U, and Cambridge International A-Levels. This calculator covers all of these.
No — Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College London and many other highly selective universities do not use UCAS Tariff Points in their admissions decisions. They make offers based on specific grades (e.g. A*A*A at A-Level or 40+ at IB). Always check each university's individual entry requirements.
Requirements vary widely. Many universities accept students with 96–112 UCAS points. Top Russell Group universities typically look for 128–152+ points. Highly competitive courses at Exeter, Bath or Durham may need 152–167 points. Use this calculator to get your total and see which band you fall into.
Yes — many students hold a mix of A-Levels and BTEC qualifications. UCAS Tariff Points from different qualification types are simply added together. This calculator lets you select and enter multiple qualification types simultaneously.
A full IB Diploma score of 45 is worth 168 UCAS Tariff Points — the same as three A* grades at A-Level. A score of 35 is worth 130 points. Individual IB Higher Level and Standard Level subjects also carry their own tariff values if you are not claiming the full diploma.
Yes. AS-Levels taken as standalone qualifications carry their own UCAS Tariff Points (e.g. Grade A = 20 points). However, many universities state they only count A-Level grades, not AS-Levels, in their offers. Check individual university requirements to confirm.
