Maths Modular IGCSE Edexcel: Units, Cash-in & Revision
Maths modular IGCSE Edexcel is Pearson’s unit-based route for International GCSE Mathematics Specification A — not the older linear 4MA1 model (two papers at the end). Schools outside the UK can offer modular assessment from first teaching September 2024, first exams June 2025. If your timetable says 4WM1 or 4WM2 unit codes, this guide is for you.

Modular vs linear Edexcel IGCSE maths — quick comparison
| Modular (Specification A Modular) | Linear (4MA1) | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | 2 units, each 50% | 2 papers (1 + 2), 100 marks each |
| When you sit exams | Unit 1 when ready, then Unit 2 (order advised on first entry) | Both papers in one exam series |
| Resits | Individual units before cash-in | Usually resit full qualification |
| Final grade | Cash-in after both units | Grade from combined papers |
| Exam time | 2 h per unit (100 marks each) | 2 h per paper (100 marks each) |
| Availability | International schools only (not UK) | International + widely used |
Pearson states modular and linear cover the same mathematics content; only assessment timing changes (modular maths page).
Unit codes and tiers (check with your exams officer)
Higher tier (grades 9–4 on modular scale; confirm current grade scale with school):
| Unit | Typical code | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Unit 1 | 4WM1H/01 | 50% |
| Unit 2 | 4WM2H/01 | 50% |
Foundation tier:
| Unit | Typical code | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Unit 1 | 4WM1F/01 | 50% |
| Unit 2 | 4WM2F/01 | 50% |
Cash-in (overall qualification grade): 4XMAH (Higher) or 4XMAF (Foundation) — your centre enters cash-in when both unit results are ready (Pearson entry rules PDF).
Important: Do not mix Foundation and Higher units. Sit both units at the same tier, then cash-in.
How modular maths assessment works in practice
- First entry: Pearson strongly advises sitting Unit 1 then Unit 2 in order.
- Series: Units can be taken in June or November (and resat in later series).
- Resits: After first entry, units may be resat in any order until you cash-in.
- Cash-in: You receive an overall 9–1 grade only after cash-in — not from a single unit alone.
- No time limit on completing units before cash-in (per Pearson administrative guidance — confirm school policy).
Revision plan for modular IGCSE maths
Before Unit 1
- Map Unit 1 content from the official modular specification.
- Practise Unit 1 sample assessments and any school mock labelled 4WM1.
- Mix topic drills + one full 2-hour timed unit paper — Past Paper Exam Timer.
- Use Edexcel 4MA1 common mistakes for technique (content aligns closely).
- Top tested topics 4MA1 still helps prioritise.
Between Unit 1 and Unit 2
- Analyse Unit 1 script with the mark scheme — mark scheme review.
- If Unit 1 was weak, discuss resit timing with your exams officer before cash-in.
- Start Unit 2 topics; do not assume Unit 2 is “everything left” without the spec list.
Before cash-in
- Ensure both unit results are on your statement of entry.
- One final mixed-topic timed paper under full 2 h discipline.
- Grade boundary tracker — Edexcel maths for raw-mark context (use the series your school publishes).
Past papers and resources
- Linear 4MA1 past papers on Tutopiya’s Edexcel maths bank — excellent for topic style while modular unit papers build on the portal.
- Edexcel IGCSE maths past papers hub for worked-solution habits.
- CIE vs Edexcel IGCSE if you are choosing boards.
Modular maths for parents and schools
- Same rigour as linear — modular is not an “easier maths IGCSE”.
- Planning: spread exams across Year 10–11; track unit entries and cash-in deadlines.
- Resit strategy: one weak unit can be retaken without repeating both papers (before cash-in).
- IGCSE tuition for targeted Unit 1 or Unit 2 gaps.
Frequently asked questions
Is maths modular IGCSE Edexcel the same as 4MA1?
No. 4MA1 is the linear specification (papers 1H/2H or 1F/2F). Modular uses 4WM1/4WM2 unit papers and 4XMA cash-in codes.
Can I use Cambridge 0580 resources for modular Edexcel maths?
Topic overlap is high, but always check the Edexcel modular syllabus — command words, formulae sheet, and paper layout differ.
When were modular Edexcel IGCSE maths exams first available?
June 2025 series (first teaching September 2024). Always confirm with your school for your cohort.
Are modular and linear grades comparable for universities?
Pearson and schools treat them as the same qualification standard; the 9–1 grade after cash-in is what matters.
