Search for the hardest A Level subjects and you’ll get a ranked list. The lists disagree with each other, which tells you something.

A more useful question is which subject has the biggest jump from where you’re standing. That one has an answer, and it’s written in the syllabuses.

”Hardest” is really four different questions

Cambridge publishes how every subject splits its marks. Compare three at A Level:

A subject where 40% of the grade is knowledge rewards a student who can hold a lot of content. A subject where knowledge is 20% and the other 80% is spread across four separate skills rewards someone else entirely.

So the hardest A Level subject is the one weighted towards the thing you’re worst at. That’s not a dodge. It’s the only ranking that predicts anything.

Mathematics: one subject becomes three

The biggest structural jump belongs to maths.

At IGCSE, maths was one syllabus and two papers. Cambridge 9709 splits into three strands: Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, and Probability & Statistics. For the full A Level, Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1, 30%), Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3, 30%) and Paper 5 (Probability & Statistics 1, 20%) are compulsory. The final 20% is either Paper 4, Mechanics, or Paper 6, Probability & Statistics 2.

Two consequences students rarely see coming.

Mechanics is physics wearing a maths hat: forces and motion. Drop physics after IGCSE and a fifth of your maths grade can still land there.

And the equipment changes. 9709 expects a calculator with standard scientific functions in every paper, and bars graphical calculators along with anything doing symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration. If you came through IGCSE International Mathematics 0607, which requires a graphic display calculator for Papers 3 to 6, two years of habit stop working.

There’s a mitigation worth knowing. In 9709 exams you’re given a list of formulae and statistical tables, MF19. Memorising formulae is not the skill being assessed.

The sciences: practical work becomes a fifth of the grade

Here is the jump nobody budgets for.

Cambridge Biology 9700 puts 20% of the qualification on AO3, experimental skills and investigations. That’s assessed in two separate papers: Paper 3, Advanced Practical Skills, at 2 hours and 40 marks, and Paper 5, Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, at 1 hour 15 minutes and 30 marks. Together they’re 23% of the A Level.

The detail that matters is in the syllabus description of both papers: the context of the questions may be outside the syllabus content.

Read that again, because no IGCSE paper works this way. You can be handed an experiment about an organism you’ve never studied and be expected to plan, analyse and evaluate anyway. What’s being tested is whether you can do science, not whether you revised the right chapter.

Physics 9702 applies pressure from a different direction. It prints a mathematical requirements list covering arithmetic, standard form and graphs, and states that teaching those requirements should be included in the Physics course. Weak algebra doesn’t stay a maths problem. It becomes a physics mark.

English and the humanities: the skill list gets longer

Literature in English 9695 looks gentle next to a science until you read how it’s marked.

At A Level it runs five assessment objectives at 20% each: knowledge and understanding, analysis, personal response, communication, and evaluation of opinion. Only a fifth of your grade is for knowing the texts.

Two things follow. AO5, evaluation of opinion, is worth 0% at AS Level and 20% at A Level, so a skill that didn’t exist in Year 12 appears in Year 13 carrying a fifth of the marks. And Paper 2 is Prose and Unseen, meaning part of the assessment is material you’ve never read before.

The entry standard is also higher than students expect. The syllabus recommends a level of English equivalent to first language English at IGCSE. A student who took English as a Second Language is starting below the level the course is written for, and no one will mention it in September.

That combination is what makes Literature deceptive. The reading list looks finite and the workload looks light next to a science, so students who dislike memorising choose it as the safe option. Then four fifths of the grade turns out to depend on skills that can’t be revised the night before: forming a personal response worth defending, and evaluating other people’s readings rather than reproducing them.

It’s a genuinely different kind of hard. Nobody can tell you which texts will appear in an unseen paper, so preparation means becoming the sort of reader who can handle anything, which takes two years and can’t be compressed.

Economics and business: the maths ambush

Economics 9708 has the most misunderstood prior-knowledge statement in the Cambridge catalogue.

It recommends learners have completed a course in mathematics equivalent to IGCSE Extended or O Level. It does not recommend prior study of Economics.

So the subject is open to anyone, which is true and is how it’s marketed, while quietly assuming the maths is already there. Students who chose Economics partly to avoid maths find the assumption waiting for them.

The mark split is gentler than the reputation suggests. IGCSE Economics 0455 runs 40% knowledge, 40% analysis, 20% evaluation. A Level 9708 runs 35%, 40%, 25%. That’s a five percentage point shift, not a new discipline. What changes is answer length and the standard applied: within 9708, knowledge is worth 47% of the multiple-choice papers but only 33% of the data response and essay papers.

The jump that isn’t in any subject: unsupervised time

Every ranking of hardest A Level subjects compares content. The largest step up isn’t content at all, and it’s identical across every subject on your timetable.

Cambridge designs each A Level around about 360 guided learning hours, against roughly 130 for one IGCSE. Guided hours are the taught ones. Tripling them tells you what happens to everything around them.

At IGCSE you carried eight or nine subjects with frequent checkpoints, work that was set and collected, and a syllabus broad enough that a bad fortnight didn’t sink anything. Three A Levels replace that with three subjects, few checkpoints, and long stretches where nothing is due.

The effect is that the subject you find hardest is often just the subject you postponed. Depth punishes postponement in a way breadth never did, because there’s no shallow end to retreat to.

Which is why two students can rate the same subject as the hardest and the easiest on their timetable. One did the reading; one meant to.

An AS Level checkpoint changes the shape

Worth knowing while you’re weighing difficulty: the qualification can be taken in stages.

Cambridge designs an AS Level around about 180 guided learning hours, half a full A Level, and it exists as a qualification in its own right. Some schools enter students for AS components at the end of Year 12 and complete the A Level in Year 13.

For a subject you’re worried about, that structure matters more than the subject’s reputation. It converts one enormous end point into two, and gives you a real grade in hand before the final year. Whether it’s available depends on your subject and your school’s entry policy.

One caveat if the subject is maths. Paper 2, Pure Mathematics 2, is offered only as part of an AS Level and isn’t available for the A Level, so an AS built from Papers 1 and 2 doesn’t carry forward into the full qualification. Staged routes use Paper 1 with Paper 4 or Paper 5 in the first year instead.

What actually determines your jump

Three things, none of which appear in a ranked list.

Which IGCSE you took. 9709 was designed around a handover from 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029. Coming from 0607 changes your calculator habits. Coming from a national curriculum changes the order the content was taught in.

Whether the assumed skill is your weak one. A student with strong algebra finds Physics much smaller than a student without it, regardless of how good they are at physics.

How the subject is weighted against your profile. If you retain content well but write slowly, Biology at 40% knowledge suits you better than Literature at 20%. If you argue well but forget detail, the reverse.

The hours are identical either way. Cambridge designs every A Level around about 360 guided learning hours against roughly 130 for an IGCSE, and that same sentence appears in the Maths, Physics, Biology, Economics and Literature syllabuses.

How to check your own jump this week

Open the syllabus for each subject you’re considering, on the Cambridge website, for your exam years. Read two short sections: Previous study, and the assessment objective weightings.

That’s about ten minutes per subject and it tells you more than any difficulty ranking, because it tells you what the examiner is buying and what the course assumes you arrive with.

Then be honest about which assumed skills are automatic and which are merely familiar. That list is the real answer to which subjects will be hardest for you.
