The Gap Between IGCSE and A Levels: What Changes Before Year 12
Your last IGCSE paper is in June. Your first A Level lesson is in late August. In between sits about ten weeks when nobody sets you work and nobody tells you what’s coming. That’s the gap between IGCSE and A Levels, and it doesn’t show up on a timetable or a report card.
The gap is a date range on a calendar
Cambridge runs exam series in June and November. For June candidates, IGCSE and O Level results come out in mid-August, and sixth forms in the UK and British international schools across the Gulf start Year 12 within a fortnight either side of that.
So the summer has a fixed shape:
- Mid-June: your last paper. The work stops.
- Mid-August: results, roughly nine weeks later.
- Late August: Year 12 begins, often before you’ve absorbed the grades.
November candidates get a compressed version. Results land in mid-January, by which point teaching has already started.
Ten weeks is long enough to lose fluency in a subject you were sharp at in May. It’s also long enough to arrive ready. What decides which is whether anyone told you what the next course assumes.
What A Level assumes you already know
The word doing the damage is assumed.
Every Cambridge A Level syllabus opens with a short section on what you should have studied first, and it’s the part nobody reads. Three examples from the current syllabuses:
- Mathematics 9709 assumes IGCSE Mathematics 0580 (Extended) or O Level 4024/4029. It also expects you to manipulate simple surds and to know the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ.
- Physics 9702 recommends you’ve completed Physics or Co-ordinated Science to IGCSE or O Level standard.
- Economics 9708 recommends a course in mathematics equivalent to IGCSE Extended or O Level. Not Economics. Mathematics.
That last one catches people every year. You can start A Level Economics having never studied Economics, but the syllabus quietly expects the maths to be there.
None of it gets retaught. Assumed knowledge is what your teacher uses on day one without checking you have it, and a shaky grasp in week three doesn’t earn a remedial lesson.
The workload changes more than the difficulty does
Cambridge designs IGCSE syllabuses around about 130 guided learning hours per subject. It designs each AS Level around 180, and a full A Level around 360. That is the same sentence in the Maths, Physics and Economics syllabuses, so it isn’t a quirk of one subject.
Run the comparison:
- You probably sat eight or nine IGCSEs, each built around 130 hours.
- You’ll take three A Levels, each built around 360.
The totals aren’t far apart. The distribution is. Each subject now demands close to three times the teaching time it did before, and that time goes deeper into one topic instead of wider across many.
Put 360 hours against a school year of roughly 36 teaching weeks and you get about five hours a week per subject, sustained across two years. Three subjects is fifteen hours of guided learning a week before anyone opens a book at home. That is the number worth showing a parent who is trying to work out why the evenings changed.
Most of the marks aren’t for knowing things
Cambridge Economics 9708 splits its marks three ways: 35% for knowledge and understanding, 40% for analysis, and 25% for evaluation. Two thirds of the grade is for what you do with the content rather than whether you can recall it.
The honest part is that this was already true at IGCSE. Cambridge Economics 0455 runs 40% knowledge, 40% analysis and 20% evaluation. The balance moves by five percentage points, not by a category, and IGCSE Extended Maths already puts 50 to 60% of 0580 on analysing, interpreting and communicating.
So analysis doesn’t suddenly appear in Year 12. What disappears is the slack. A recall-heavy answer could still collect marks at IGCSE; at A Level it meets a longer question and a mark scheme with two thirds of the credit sitting elsewhere. Within 9708, knowledge is worth 47% of the multiple-choice papers but only 33% of the data response and essay papers.
Physics 9702 makes the point differently. It prints a mathematical requirements list covering arithmetic, standard form and graphs, and says teaching it belongs inside the Physics course.
One subject can turn out to be three
Your timetable can also split a subject you thought you knew the shape of.
At IGCSE, maths was one syllabus and two papers. Cambridge 9709 splits into three strands: Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, and Probability & Statistics. For the full A Level, Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1, 30%), Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3, 30%) and Paper 5 (Probability & Statistics 1, 20%) are compulsory. The last 20% is either Paper 4, Mechanics, or Paper 6, Probability & Statistics 2, and your school usually decides which.
Mechanics is physics wearing a maths hat: forces and motion. Drop physics after IGCSE thinking you’re finished with it, and a fifth of your maths grade now sits there.
There’s a trap in the same syllabus. Paper 2, Pure Mathematics 2, is offered only as part of an AS Level and isn’t available for the A Level, so an AS taken with Papers 1 and 2 doesn’t carry forward into the full qualification.
Equipment changes too. 9709 expects a scientific calculator and bars graphical ones, which is a tool removed if you came through IGCSE International Mathematics 0607, where a graphic display calculator is required for Papers 3 to 6.
Why strong IGCSE grades don’t close the gap
An A* is a real achievement. It’s also a measurement of one thing: how well you handled that syllabus, in the format it uses, on the day you sat it.
It doesn’t tell you whether a skill is fluent enough to survive being one step inside a longer question, or whether you can sustain a topic across eight weeks instead of meeting it for two.
This is where what a parent sees and what a student experiences come apart. A parent reads a report card full of A and A* grades and reasonably concludes the groundwork is done. Meanwhile the student is three weeks into Year 12, following a lesson that assumes something they last used in March, and quietly deciding they’ve become bad at the subject.
A grade looks backwards at a finished syllabus. Readiness looks forwards at the one about to start.
What a well-spent gap actually looks like
Less than you would think. Around twenty hours across the whole summer, and none of it in the first three weeks.
- Weeks one to three: stop completely. You’ve just sat a full exam series. Rest isn’t procrastination, and revision done while exhausted doesn’t stay put.
- Read the prior-knowledge page of every syllabus you’re taking. It’s one page, it’s free on the Cambridge website, and it’s the only place that tells you exactly what day one assumes.
- Weeks four to eight: short and regular. Three or four sessions a week, forty minutes each, aimed only at what that page listed. A session is one page of practice, not a chapter.
- Practise writing answers, not just getting them. Most of the marks are for analysis and evaluation, and that’s a habit you build in August or fight in November.
- Mid-August: read your results, then move on. Whatever they say, Year 12 starts in a fortnight.
Twenty hours won’t transform anyone. It’s the difference between meeting new material with your old skills warm rather than cold.
Who should bridge, and who honestly shouldn’t
Plenty of students don’t need a structured course.
You probably don’t if your IGCSE work was comfortable rather than survivable, and if you’re the kind of student who will actually do those twenty hours in August without anyone checking. Some genuinely will. For them, the syllabus prior-knowledge page and a decent textbook is enough.
A course earns its place when the honest answer is no. If the assumed skills are exactly the ones you dreaded, if you’re moving from O Level or a national curriculum into Cambridge A Levels, or if you know from experience that unstructured summer study doesn’t happen, then structure is what you’re actually buying.
