The IGCSE to A Level Transition: Five Skills the Syllabus Assumes
Every Cambridge A Level syllabus tells you what it expects you to arrive with. It’s near the front, it runs to about a page, and it’s the part nobody opens.
The IGCSE to A Level transition is mostly a collision between that page and a student who never saw it. Here are five things your first term takes for granted.
1. Fluency in the content your syllabus names
Not familiarity. Fluency.
Cambridge Mathematics 9709 assumes knowledge of IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029. It then adds two specifics: you should be able to carry out simple manipulation of surds, and know the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ.
Physics 9702 recommends you’ve completed Physics or Co-ordinated Science to IGCSE or O Level standard. Economics 9708 recommends a course in mathematics at that standard, and no Economics at all.
The difference between familiar and fluent shows up when the assumed skill isn’t the question. It’s step two of a five-step question about something else. If surds still take you thirty seconds of thought, you’ve spent your attention there instead of on the actual problem.
Picture the version that goes wrong. The question is about a tangent to a curve. You know the method, you differentiate correctly, and then the answer comes out with a root in the denominator that needs tidying. That tidying is the assumed skill. Nobody will award you a mark for it and nobody will teach it to you, but if it stalls you for a minute you’ve lost time on a paper where 9709 Paper 1 gives you 1 hour 50 minutes for 10 to 12 structured questions.
None of it is retaught. That’s what assumed means, and it’s why the list is worth reading before September rather than discovering in October.
2. Working without being chased
At IGCSE, the structure did a lot of the work. Homework had a deadline, a teacher noticed when it was missing, and the syllabus was broad enough that a bad fortnight didn’t sink a subject.
A Level removes most of that scaffolding without announcing it. Cambridge designs a full A Level around about 360 guided learning hours against roughly 130 for an IGCSE. Guided hours are the taught ones, so tripling them tells you what happens to everything around them.
In practice, independence means the boring version:
- Reading the material before the lesson that assumes you have.
- Noticing you didn’t understand something, on the day, rather than in March.
- Doing questions when nothing is due.
Nobody will ask you for any of it.
The change is visible on your timetable before you feel it. Three subjects instead of eight or nine leaves gaps in the day where lessons used to be. Those gaps are not a lighter load; they are the independent study the course is designed around, and no one will tell you that on the first morning. A student who treats them as free periods for a term arrives at the first assessment having done roughly a third of the work the syllabus assumed.
3. Writing at length, in the subject’s own register
At IGCSE you write answers. At A Level you write arguments, and the mark scheme pays for the argument rather than the recall inside it.
Cambridge Economics 9708 weights knowledge and understanding at 35% of the qualification, analysis at 40% and evaluation at 25%. Within that syllabus, knowledge is worth 47% of the multiple-choice papers but only 33% of the data response and essay papers.
The honest version: this was already true at IGCSE. Economics 0455 runs 40% knowledge, 40% analysis, 20% evaluation. The balance shifts by five percentage points.
What changes is length and standard. A paragraph that earned the mark at IGCSE becomes an opening sentence, and everything that made it a good answer has to come after it.
Register matters as much as length. Each subject has a way of writing that the mark scheme recognises: an Economics answer that names a mechanism and traces its effect, a Physics answer that states a principle and applies it to the specific situation in front of you. Writing well in general is not the same as writing well in the subject, and the second is the one being marked.
The practical test is whether you can write four hundred words that argue rather than describe. If your instinct is still to list everything you know and hope the relevant part is in there, that’s the habit the first term will charge you for.
4. The working conventions examiners actually mark
This one costs marks fastest, because it has nothing to do with understanding.
Cambridge 9709 states that candidates are expected to show all necessary working, and that no marks are given for unsupported answers from a calculator. A correct answer with nothing underneath it can score zero.
The same syllabus expects a calculator with standard scientific functions in every paper, and bars graphical calculators and any calculator that does symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration. If you came through IGCSE International Mathematics 0607, where a graphic display calculator is required for Papers 3 to 6, a tool you leaned on for two years has just been taken away.
Physics 9702 prints a mathematical requirements list covering arithmetic, standard form and graphs, and says teaching it belongs inside the Physics course. The conventions aren’t background admin. They’re examined.
There’s one convention that runs the other way, and students consistently get it wrong. In 9709 examinations you’re supplied with a list of formulae and statistical tables, MF19. Memorising formulae is not what’s being tested. Plenty of students spend August on flashcards for material they’ll be handed in the exam hall, while the thing that actually loses marks, writing the method out in full, goes unpractised.
The habit to build is narrow and slightly tedious: work every question as if the method is what’s marked, because it is. Getting the right answer in your head and writing only that is the fastest way to score zero on a question you understood.
5. Enough time management to make five hours a week routine
Do the arithmetic on the hours.
360 guided learning hours across a school year of roughly 36 teaching weeks, over two years, is about five hours a week per subject. Three subjects is around fifteen hours of taught time weekly, and your own work sits on top.
At IGCSE you probably carried eight or nine subjects at about 130 hours each. The totals aren’t far apart, which is exactly why the change is easy to miss. What moved is the concentration. Nine shallow subjects can be revised hard at the end. Three deep ones can’t, because there’s no end to revise towards until there’s two years of material behind you.
The students who struggle in the first term are rarely the ones who can’t do the work. They’re the ones still using a method built for breadth.
What to do with this list
Read the front section of each syllabus you’re taking, before term starts. On the Cambridge website, find your subject and exam years, open the PDF, and read Previous study and Prior knowledge. It’s one page per subject.
Then be honest about which of the five above is genuinely automatic for you and which is merely familiar. That’s a shorter list than a whole summer of revision, and it’s the one that pays.
