Choosing an A Level Preparation Course Online: Gaps by Subject

Search for an A Level preparation course online and the results treat all subjects as one product. They are not.

What Mathematics assumes and what Literature assumes have almost nothing in common, and the gap that matters is different in each case. Here is what the syllabuses actually say, subject by subject, so you can work out which gap is yours.

The thing every subject has in common

One structure repeats across every Cambridge A Level, and it is the reason preparation is possible at all.

Each syllabus states what it expects you to arrive with, in a section headed Previous study or Prior knowledge. It runs to about a page and is free on the Cambridge website.

That material is assumed. It is not on the teaching plan, it does not get a revision lesson, and your teacher will use it in week three without checking whether you have it. Everything else in the syllabus gets taught; this does not.

So a bridging course is only doing something useful if it is scoped to that page. A course teaching the first topics of Year 12 is teaching material your class will cover again at exam pace.

Mathematics: the biggest structural change

Maths has the largest jump, and it is structural rather than difficulty-based.

At IGCSE, maths was one syllabus and two papers. Cambridge 9709 splits into three strands: Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, and Probability & Statistics. For the full A Level, Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1) and Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) carry 30% each, Paper 5 (Probability & Statistics 1) carries 20%, and the last 20% is either Paper 4, Mechanics, or Paper 6, Probability & Statistics 2.

The assumed knowledge is short and specific: IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029, plus simple manipulation of surds and the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ.

The equipment change catches people hardest. 9709 expects a scientific calculator in every paper and bars graphical calculators, along with anything performing symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration. If you came through IGCSE International Mathematics 0607, which requires a graphic display calculator for Papers 3 to 6, that is two years of habit to unlearn.

One counterweight: in 9709 exams you are supplied with a list of formulae and statistical tables, MF19. Memorising formulae is not the skill being assessed. Writing full method is, since no marks are given for unsupported answers from a calculator.

The sciences: practical work becomes examined

Biology 9700, Chemistry 9701 and Physics 9702 share a structure, and it is a bigger change than the content.

All three weight their assessment objectives identically: knowledge and understanding 40%, handling and evaluating information 40%, and experimental skills and investigations 20%.

That last fifth is assessed in two papers. Paper 3, Advanced Practical Skills, runs 2 hours and is worth 23% of the AS and 11.5% of the A Level. Paper 5, Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, runs 1 hour 15 minutes for 30 marks and is worth 11.5% of the A Level. Together they are 23% of the full qualification.

The detail that matters sits in the syllabus description of both papers: the context of the questions may be outside the syllabus content. No IGCSE paper works this way. You can be handed an unfamiliar experiment and expected to plan, analyse and evaluate anyway.

Physics and Chemistry both add a printed mathematical requirements list, and Physics states that teaching those requirements should be included in the Physics course. Weak algebra stops being a maths problem and becomes a physics mark.

All three recommend the subject, or Co-ordinated Science, to IGCSE or O Level standard.

Economics and business: the maths assumption

Economics 9708 has the most misread prior-knowledge statement in the catalogue.

It recommends learners have completed a course in mathematics equivalent to IGCSE Extended or O Level. It does not recommend prior study of Economics.

So the subject is genuinely open to newcomers, which is how it is marketed, while quietly assuming numeracy that some students chose Economics to avoid.

The mark split is gentler than its reputation. IGCSE Economics 0455 runs 40% knowledge, 40% analysis, 20% evaluation. A Level 9708 runs 35%, 40%, 25%. A five percentage point shift, not a new discipline. What changes is answer length and standard: within 9708, knowledge is worth 47% of the multiple-choice papers but only 33% of the data response and essay papers.

English and Literature: the entry standard is the gap

Literature in English 9695 looks manageable until you read how it is marked.

At A Level it runs five assessment objectives at 20% each: knowledge and understanding, analysis, personal response, communication, and evaluation of opinion. Only a fifth of the grade is for knowing the texts.

Two specifics worth knowing. AO5, evaluation of opinion, is worth 0% at AS Level and 20% at A Level, so a skill that did not exist in Year 12 arrives in Year 13 carrying a fifth of the marks. And Paper 2 is Prose and Unseen, meaning part of the assessment is material you have never read.

The prior knowledge is the real barrier here. The syllabus recommends a level of English equivalent to first language English at IGCSE. A student who took English as a Second Language is starting below the level the course is written for, and nobody raises it in September.

Different gaps, different work. A single generic “A Level preparation course” cannot address all four, which is why the scope question matters more than the format.

Why online suits this particular job

Format usually matters less than scope, but there are two reasons this specific task works well online.

The work is short and repeated rather than long and continuous. Three or four sessions a week of about forty minutes, across four or five weeks, fits around a summer that also contains a holiday. Anything requiring attendance at a fixed place for a block of days competes with the rest of the break.

It is also individual by nature. Your audit produces a list nobody else has, because it depends on which IGCSE you sat, which topics you avoided and which conventions you never met. A classroom of twenty students has twenty different lists, and the value is in working through yours rather than the average of theirs.

What that means practically: judge an online course on whether it diagnoses and targets, not on production values or hours of video.

Find your gap first, in ten minutes

Before choosing any course, find out which of the gaps above is actually yours.

  1. Download each syllabus for your subjects and exam years from the Cambridge website.
  2. Read Previous study and Prior knowledge, and write out every named skill.
  3. Try questions where each skill appears as a step rather than the topic.
  4. Mark each one automatic, slow, or gone.

That list is the thing to shop with. It tells you whether you need algebraic fluency rehearsed, practical write-ups practised, or a maths assumption closed before an Economics course starts using it.

It also tells you the size of the job, which is usually about twenty hours. Any programme proposing far more than that is teaching Year 12 content early, and your class will cover that again at exam pace with a teacher who knows your school’s route.

Start with the gap you found

If your audit points at maths, start with Pre-A Level Mathematics while the window is open. It is the handover the whole programme is built around, and algebraic fluency is the gap that shows up inside Physics, Chemistry and Economics too, not only in maths lessons.
