A Level Guided Learning Hours: How Much Time A Levels Take
Most descriptions of the A Level workload are adjectives. Intense, demanding, a big step up. None of them tell you how many hours to plan for.
Cambridge publishes the number, in every syllabus, and it makes the whole thing countable.
The published figures
Cambridge states the design assumption directly:
- Cambridge IGCSE: about 130 guided learning hours per subject.
- Cambridge International AS Level: about 180.
- Cambridge International A Level: about 360.
That same sentence about 180 and 360 appears in the Mathematics 9709, Physics 9702, Chemistry 9701, Biology 9700, Economics 9708 and Literature in English 9695 syllabuses. It is a qualification-wide design figure, not something one subject decided.
Cambridge also adds a caveat worth keeping: the number of hours a learner actually needs may vary by school and by previous experience of the subject. It is a design assumption, not a promise.
What “guided” excludes
This is where families misread the figure, usually downwards.
Guided learning hours are the taught hours: lessons, supervised practical work, directed sessions with a teacher present. They do not include homework, private revision, reading, past-paper practice or anything else your child does alone.
So 360 hours is not the size of the course. It is the size of the part somebody else schedules. The independent half is real, unscheduled, and nobody sends a reminder about it.
Converting to a week
The number becomes useful once you divide it.
A school year runs roughly 36 teaching weeks. An A Level spans two of them, so about 72 teaching weeks in total.
360 ÷ 72 = five hours a week per subject of taught time.
For three A Levels:

The comparison that catches people out
Set it against where your child has come from.
- Before: eight or nine IGCSEs, about 130 hours each. Total roughly 1,040 to 1,170.
- After: three A Levels, about 360 hours each. Total roughly 1,080.
The totals are almost identical. That is exactly why the change is invisible from outside, and why “the timetable doesn’t look any heavier” is a real observation rather than denial.
What changed is concentration. The same quantity of teaching now goes into three subjects instead of nine. Depth replaces breadth, and the two reward completely different habits.
Why the distribution matters more than the total
A wide, shallow syllabus tolerates postponement. You can revise a 130-hour subject fairly hard in the fortnight before an assessment, because there is not that much of it and the checkpoints come often.
A 360-hour subject does not work that way. There is no shallow end to retreat to, no frequent checkpoint forcing a catch-up, and by the time an assessment arrives there may be a term of cumulative material behind it.
This is the mechanism behind most first-term difficulties. The method that worked across nine subjects produces roughly a third of the required work in three, and nothing flags it until something is marked.
Where the AS figure fits
The 180-hour AS number is not just an arithmetic halfway point.
An AS Level is a qualification in its own right, and some schools enter students for AS components at the end of Year 12 and complete the A Level in Year 13. That converts one two-year commitment into two shorter ones with a graded result in the middle.
Two things worth knowing before assuming it is available. Candidates on an AS route are eligible for grades a to e, while A Level candidates are eligible for A* to E, so there is no A* at AS. And whether the staged route runs at all depends on the subject and your school’s policy.
What to do with the number
Three practical uses.
Sanity-check a fourth subject. A fourth A Level adds about five hours a week of taught time plus independent study, for two years. That is roughly a third more work, taken out of the three subjects an offer will actually depend on.
Plan the independent half deliberately. If fifteen hours a week are timetabled, the unscheduled work needs a shape of its own. Regular short sessions beat weekend catch-ups, because the material is cumulative.
Set expectations about the gap before Year 12. The preparation that helps in the summer is about twenty hours in total, targeted at the prior knowledge each syllabus names. Against 1,080 hours of teaching, twenty hours is obviously not a head start on the course, and it is not meant to be. It exists so the assumed skills are warm when a lesson uses one without pausing.
Where the independent hours actually go
The unscheduled half is the part families cannot see, so it helps to name what it contains.
For a science, a large slice goes on practical write-ups. Biology 9700, Chemistry 9701 and Physics 9702 each put 20% of the qualification on experimental skills, and that is not absorbed by watching a demonstration. For an essay subject it goes on writing full answers rather than planning them, because Literature in English 9695 spreads its marks across five assessment objectives at 20% each and only one of those is knowing the texts.
For maths it goes on questions. Cambridge 9709 expects all necessary working shown, and gives no marks for unsupported answers from a calculator, so the practice has to be written out rather than done in the head.
None of that is optional enrichment. It is the half of the course the 360 hours does not cover.
The honest summary
A Levels take about fifteen hours of taught time a week for three subjects, plus a substantial and unscheduled amount at home, sustained across two years.
That is more than most families expect per subject and roughly the same in total as nine IGCSEs. Knowing the figure turns a vague sense of pressure into a number you can plan around, which is most of what makes the two years manageable.
