A Level Bridging Courses: Who They Are For, and What They Cover
Around week three of Year 12, a lesson will use something without pausing to explain it. Not as the topic. As step two of a question about something else.
If that skill is fluent, you will not notice it happen. If it is merely familiar, you will spend the lesson on the assumed part and miss the new part, and your teacher will move on in week four regardless.
An A Level bridging course exists to make sure you are the first student rather than the second.
What a bridging course actually covers
Every Cambridge A Level syllabus states its starting point in a section called Previous study or Prior knowledge. It is about a page, and it is startlingly specific.
Mathematics 9709 assumes IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029, and then names two things directly: simple manipulation of surds, and the shapes of graphs of the form y = kxⁿ. Physics 9702 recommends Physics or Co-ordinated Science to IGCSE or O Level standard. Economics 9708 recommends a course in mathematics, not Economics.
A bridging course works through that page. Not the Year 12 syllabus, and not a general revision of everything you did at IGCSE.
The reason that distinction matters is simple. Everything else in the syllabus gets taught to you. This does not. Assumed knowledge is the material your teacher uses on day one without checking whether you have it, and there is no remedial lesson scheduled for it later.
What it isn’t
Three things get sold under the same word, and only one of them is a bridging course.
It isn’t tuition. Tuition runs alongside a course you are already taking and follows your school’s pace. A bridging course runs before the course exists.
It isn’t a head start on the A Level syllabus. Arriving having already covered the first three topics sounds useful and mostly isn’t, because you will cover them again in class at the pace the exam requires.
It isn’t remedial. The students who benefit most are usually not the weakest ones, which is the part most people get backwards. An A* at 0580 tells you that you handled the 0580 syllabus well. It does not tell you whether surds are fast enough to survive being one step inside a longer question.
Who it’s genuinely for
Four situations where a bridging course does something a textbook will not.
The assumed skill is your weakest one. Mathematics 9709 does not care that your overall 0580 grade was strong if surds were the topic you avoided. That gap follows you into Year 12 and gets used in week three.
Your syllabus assumes a subject you have never studied. Economics 9708 recommends learners have completed a mathematics course equivalent to IGCSE Extended or O Level. Students arrive at A Level Economics having never studied Economics, which is fine, and sometimes having avoided maths, which is not.
You are changing board or curriculum. Moving from a national curriculum or from O Level into Cambridge A Levels means the assumed content was taught somewhere else, in a different order, possibly with different notation. The gaps are specific to your previous school, which makes them hard to find alone.
Your equipment habits are about to break. If you came through IGCSE International Mathematics 0607, you used a graphic display calculator for Papers 3 to 6. Cambridge 9709 expects a scientific calculator in every paper and bars graphical calculators entirely, along with anything performing symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration. That is two years of habit to unlearn, and unlearning needs practice rather than explanation.
What skipping it costs
The cost is not dramatic, which is why it goes unnoticed until it is expensive.
Cambridge 9709 Paper 1 alone is 75 marks across 10 to 12 structured questions in 1 hour 50 minutes, and every topic in Pure Mathematics 1 has to be taught before you sit it. There is no slack in that schedule for going back over surds, and the syllabus already told you they were assumed.
So the gap does not stay where it started. It becomes something you carry into quadratics, then into differentiation, and by October you are quietly deciding you have become bad at maths.
That conclusion is almost always wrong, and it is almost always traceable to one specific skill nobody rehearsed in August.
A self-test that takes ten minutes
Before you decide anything, find out how big your gap actually is.
- Open your A Level syllabus on the Cambridge website and find Previous study and Prior knowledge.
- Write out every skill it names. It will be a short list.
- Try a question where each skill appears as a step rather than as the topic.
- Mark each one automatic, slow, or gone.
Anything automatic needs nothing. Everything in the slow or gone columns is exactly what a bridging course is for, and now you know how long that list is before anyone asks you for anything.
Why doing it alone is harder than it sounds
Plenty of guides, including ours, will tell you to read the prior-knowledge page and work through what you find. That advice is correct and it is also incomplete, because three things make it difficult in practice.
You cannot reliably grade yourself. The skill you fail to notice is, by definition, the one you do not know you are missing. Working alone, you tend to mark yourself fluent on anything you eventually got right, when the thing that matters is whether it cost you thinking time.
There is no feedback loop. At school, work is set, collected and returned. In August nothing is returned. You can spend fifteen hours practising a method incorrectly and find out in October, which is the single most expensive way to use the window.
Nothing is scheduled. This is the honest one. The plan is only about twenty hours, which sounds so small that it postpones easily. A great many students spend nine weeks intending to start.
None of that means you cannot do it alone. It means the value of a structured course is mostly in diagnosis, feedback and a schedule, rather than in content you could not otherwise find.

The step-by-step solutions matter for a specific reason too. Cambridge 9709 expects candidates to show all necessary working and gives no marks for unsupported answers from a calculator. Seeing full method modelled, question after question, builds the habit that a correct answer alone does not earn.
What a good bridging course should do
Judge any course, including this one, against four things.
- It names both syllabuses. From 0580, 0607, 0606 or 4024, into 9709. If a course only says “A Level Maths”, it has not done the mapping.
- It is scoped to prior knowledge, not Year 12 content. Anything much beyond twenty hours is teaching the course early.
- It makes you write full method, because that is what the mark scheme pays for.
- It tells you where you still are. You should finish knowing which skills are automatic and which are not.
Who honestly doesn’t need one
Worth saying, because it is what makes the rest of this trustworthy.
If the skills on your prior-knowledge page are already automatic, if you are staying on the same board, and if you are genuinely the kind of student who will do a few hours a week in August with nobody checking, then a syllabus page and a good textbook will do the job.
Some students are exactly that. If you are one, you have just had the whole benefit for free, and you should keep your money.
The honest filter is the third condition rather than the first two. Most people know which answer applies to them.
When to start
The window is shorter than it looks. June candidates finish in mid-June, get results in mid-August, and start Year 12 within a fortnight. The first three weeks should be genuine rest, and the last two are consumed by results and term starting.
That leaves about four or five usable weeks. November candidates get less, because results land in mid-January when teaching has usually already begun, so the work has to happen before results rather than after.
Run the ten-minute self-test, and if your list is longer than one item, start with Pre-A Level Mathematics while the window is still open.
