Yes. A Level is harder than IGCSE. The useful question is which part gets harder, because the popular answer is wrong often enough to cost students their first term.

Most comparisons say A Level is where you stop memorising and start thinking. That sounds right and it doesn’t survive contact with the syllabuses.

The skills barely change. The volume triples

Take Economics, where you can compare the two levels directly.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 splits its marks 40% knowledge and understanding, 40% analysis, 20% evaluation. Cambridge A Level Economics 9708 splits them 35%, 40%, 25%.

That is a five percentage point shift. Analysis was already the largest single share of an IGCSE Economics grade. It’s the same story in maths: IGCSE Extended 0580 already puts 50 to 60% of the marks on analysing, interpreting and communicating rather than on recalling techniques.

The Extended tier is the relevant comparison, and it’s worth seeing why. On 0580 Core, knowledge and understanding carries 60 to 70% of the marks. On Extended it drops to 40 to 50%. The shift towards reasoning has already happened once, inside IGCSE, before A Level is mentioned. A student who took the Extended tier has been marked on that balance for two years.

Now look at hours. Cambridge designs IGCSE syllabuses around about 130 guided learning hours per subject. It designs each AS Level around 180 and a full A Level around 360. That same sentence appears in the Maths, Physics and Economics syllabuses, so it isn’t one subject’s quirk.

The skills you’re being asked for stay roughly constant. The amount of material you apply them to roughly triples.

What three A Levels actually costs you in a week

Put 360 hours against a school year of about 36 teaching weeks. That’s five hours a week per subject, sustained across two years.

Three subjects comes to about fifteen hours a week of guided learning, before anyone opens a book at home.

Compare that with the IGCSE shape most students arrive from:

  • Eight or nine subjects, each built around 130 hours.
  • Three subjects, each built around 360 hours.

The totals aren’t far apart, which is why the change catches people out. Nothing on the timetable looks heavier. What changed is that the same effort now goes into three subjects instead of nine, and depth is less forgiving than breadth. You can revise a wide, shallow syllabus in the fortnight before a test. You cannot compress two years of one subject into the same fortnight.

The pace is set by the paper, not the teacher

A syllabus tells you how fast a course has to move.

Cambridge 9709 Paper 1, Pure Mathematics 1, runs 1 hour 50 minutes for 75 marks across 10 to 12 structured questions. It’s compulsory for both AS Level and the full A Level, and it carries 60% of the AS grade. Everything in that content list has to be taught before you sit it.

That maths is the reason a teacher who notices half the class is shaky on surds in week three still moves on in week four. There is no slack in the schedule for a remedial lesson, and no expectation that there should be, because the syllabus already told you surds were assumed.

At IGCSE the same content is spread across two years and eight or nine subjects, so a slow week costs less. At A Level a slow week is a topic you now carry.

Independence is the part nobody times

Guided learning hours are the hours somebody teaches you. The rest is yours, and the syllabus doesn’t tell you how many there are.

This is the genuine step up, and it shows in ordinary ways:

  • Nobody checks whether you did the reading before the lesson that assumes it.
  • Homework stops being a task with a completion date and becomes the only place you find out what you don’t understand.
  • The gap between “I followed that lesson” and “I could answer a question on that lesson” opens up, and only practice closes it.

A student who coped at IGCSE by paying attention in class and revising hard at the end has a method that works. It works for 130 hours of content per subject. It doesn’t scale to 360.

Assessment style changes more than the mark split suggests

The assessment objectives barely move, but what an examiner accepts against them does.

In Economics 9708, knowledge is worth 47% of the multiple-choice papers and only 33% of the data response and essay papers. The longer the answer you’re asked to write, the smaller the share of the mark that comes from what you know.

Physics 9702 shows the same pressure from another direction. It prints a mathematical requirements list covering arithmetic, standard form and graphs, and states that teaching those should be included in the Physics course. The maths isn’t a side skill in a science A Level. It’s examined content.

And in 9709, candidates are expected to show all necessary working, with no marks given for unsupported answers from a calculator. An answer that’s simply correct can still score nothing.

How much harder depends on which IGCSE you took

“Is A Level harder than IGCSE” has a different answer depending on which IGCSE you sat.

Cambridge 9709 names its assumed starting point precisely: IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended, or O Level 4024/4029. If that’s your route, the content handover is the one the syllabus was designed around.

The route matters most for equipment. On 0580 Extended you sat Paper 2 with no calculator and Paper 4 with a scientific one, each 2 hours for 100 marks. On IGCSE International Mathematics 0607 you sat Papers 1 and 2 with no calculator, but Papers 3 to 6 require a graphic display calculator.

Cambridge 9709 expects a scientific calculator in every paper and bars graphical calculators outright, along with any calculator that performs symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration. For a 0607 student, that’s two years of habit removed in one step. For a 0580 student it’s barely a change.

There’s a counterweight worth knowing. In 9709 examinations you’re given a list of formulae and statistical tables, MF19. Memorising formulae is not the skill being tested, which is not what most students expect of a harder course.

What is genuinely not harder

Some of the fear around A Levels is misplaced, and it’s worth saying which parts.

Entry doesn’t depend on a grade. Cambridge states prior study as having completed a course, not as having achieved a mark in it. Mathematics 9709 assumes IGCSE 0580 Extended or O Level 4024/4029. Physics 9702 recommends Physics or Co-ordinated Science to IGCSE or O Level standard. Economics 9708 recommends a mathematics course at that standard, and no Economics at all.

You also sit fewer papers, in fewer subjects, over a longer period. Students who found the sheer breadth of nine IGCSEs punishing often find three A Levels a relief, because interest and depth pull in the same direction for once.

The qualification can be taken in stages, too. Cambridge designs an AS Level around about 180 guided learning hours, half the full A Level, and it exists as a qualification in its own right. Some students sit AS components at the end of Year 12 and complete the A Level in Year 13, which turns one enormous end point into two smaller ones. Whether that route is open to you depends on your subject and your school’s entry policy, and it’s a question worth asking in September rather than in June.

And the subjects are ones you chose. Nine IGCSEs included several you were required to take. Three A Levels are three you picked, which changes how much of the work feels like an imposition.

So how hard is it, honestly

Harder in three specific ways: about three times the hours per subject, a pace fixed by the paper rather than by the class, and far more unsupervised time that nobody will chase you about.

Not harder in the way it’s usually described. You were already being marked on analysis at IGCSE. A Level removes the slack that let a recall-heavy answer collect marks anyway.

That distinction matters, because it changes what preparation is worth doing. Rereading IGCSE notes prepares you for a test you’ve already sat. Practising the assumed skills until they’re automatic, and writing full answers rather than checking that you got them right, prepares you for the one coming.
