How practical questions are phrased
Describe a method (4–6 marks)
- Describe how you would investigate the effect of pH on the rate of amylase activity.
Independent variable (pH), dependent variable (time to clear starch / colour change), control variables (temperature, enzyme concentration), repeat and mean.
Safety and hazards (2–3 marks)
- Give one hazard when using iodine solution and how you would reduce the risk.
Named hazard + sensible precaution (goggles, low concentration, dispose correctly).
Analyse results (data)
- Plot a graph of the results in Table 1. or Calculate the mean time.
Axes labelled with units; graph skills.
Evaluate and improve
- Suggest one reason why Student A’s conclusion may not be valid.
Sample size, control missing, anomaly ignored, measurement error.
