Edexcel IGCSE Physics 4PH1: Frequent mistakes

Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Physics 4PH1 shares many common errors with Science Double Award. Principal Examiner Feedback identifies recurring issues in calculations, practical work and terminology.

General science errors (Physics component)

Hidden edges and 3D shapes

Foundation tier candidates struggle with hidden edges when counting edges on 3D shape diagrams. Missing edges that are not visible.

Fix: Visualise or sketch. Count all edges—visible and hidden. Use correct terminology (vertices, edges, faces).

Mathematical terminology

Unfamiliar with terms like “terminating decimal” (e.g. 0.5, 0.25). Confusion between multiples and factors.

Fix: Terminating decimal = ends (e.g. 0.5). Recurring = repeats (e.g. 0.333…). Multiples = times table; factors = divide exactly.

Precision in language

Lacking precision in physics language. Failing to make clear comparisons when required.

Fix: Use correct terms (velocity, speed, acceleration, force). Compare explicitly: “X is greater than Y because…”

Calculations and graphs

Reading scales

Difficulty reading scales on graphs. Wrong values from axes; incorrect units.

Fix: Check scale. Units on axes. Interpolate carefully.

Standard form and symbols

Errors with standard form calculations. Using invalid symbols or wrong notation.

Fix: a × 10ⁿ, 1 ≤ a < 10. Use correct symbols (Ω, V, A, etc.). Minus sign in negative powers.

Practical and application

Show working

As with other subjects, not showing all working costs method marks. Calculators used without written steps.

Fix: Show formula. Substitute. Calculate. Answer + units.

Applying concepts

Struggling to apply concepts to unfamiliar contexts. Suggest questions require application.

Fix: Identify the physics principle. Apply to the scenario. Link cause and effect.
