AQA GCSE Grade Boundaries 2024 — Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths
AQA GCSE grade boundaries for the core sciences and mathematics are published after every examination series. This guide explains historical boundaries, how the 9–1 scale works, and how to use them for targeted revision.
How AQA GCSE Grade Boundaries Work
AQA uses the 9–1 grading scale. Unlike a fixed percentage system, boundaries are set after each examination series based on:
- The difficulty of that year’s papers
- Maintenance of standards from previous years
- Statistical analysis of student performance
This means boundaries shift year to year. A 9 in Biology might require 162/200 one year and 155/200 the next.
Grade 4 is the standard pass (equivalent to a C on the old A–G scale). Grade 7 is equivalent to an A. Grade 9 is awarded to approximately the top 3–5% of students.

How to Use Grade Boundaries in Revision
Step 1: Know your target grade and the mark required. Use the tables above to identify your specific target. Vague goals like “I want to pass” are less effective than “I need 78 more marks for a Grade 7 in Biology.”
Step 2: Track your performance on past papers against boundaries. After every past paper, record your raw mark. Compare it to the historical boundary table. This shows your current grade band and how far you are from moving up.
Step 3: Identify your topic weaknesses. Past paper marking tells you which topics are costing marks. Focus revision on those specific areas rather than re-reading notes on topics you already know.
Step 4: Prioritise by marks available. Topics that appear in multiple questions or carry high marks deserve more revision time. In AQA Biology, topics like Cell Biology, Infection & Response, and Bioenergetics appear across both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
