IB Points and Diploma Requirements: Passing the IB
The IB points system
- Each subject: 1–7
- TOK + EE: up to 3 (via matrix)
- Maximum total: 45 (42 from subjects + 3 from core)
Minimum for the diploma
24 points is the minimum, but other conditions must also be met. The diploma is not awarded on points alone.
Diploma conditions (summary)
To receive the diploma, candidates must:
- Points: Score at least 24 (or meet specific conditions for 23–24)
- No grade 1 in any subject
- No grade 2 at HL (or at most one grade 2 at HL if compensated)
- No grade 3 at HL (or at most one, with compensation)
- Complete all six subjects
- TOK and EE: No grade E in either
- CAS: Completed satisfactorily
- No academic misconduct
Compensation
In some cases, compensation is allowed—e.g. strong performance in one area may offset a weak grade elsewhere. The IB applies these rules; schools can advise.
Certificates vs. diploma
If conditions are not met, candidates may receive subject certificates (grades for individual subjects) but not the full diploma.
What counts as “strong”?
- 40+ is very high (e.g. ~1 in 11 candidates in 2024)
- 36–39 is strong for competitive universities
- 24–28 meets the diploma minimum; university options vary
