6-Mark GCSE Biology Questions: Extended Response Guide
Six-mark (or level-based) questions are the highest-stakes biology GCSE questions on many papers—especially AQA Higher. They reward linked, relevant science, not length alone.

What examiners want
- Six distinct scientific points (or fewer if the mark scheme uses levels)
- Logical flow—each sentence adds something new
- Correct terminology from the specification
- No irrelevant padding (history of the scientist, vague “it’s important”)
Example stems (original)
- Explain how vaccination reduces the spread of measles in a population. [6 marks]
- Explain how the human body responds to a decrease in external temperature. [6 marks]
- Describe how deforestation can affect biodiversity in an area. [6 marks]
A 3-minute plan before writing
- Underline the science topic and command word (explain vs describe).
- List 6 bullet ideas in note margin (not in answer booklet if prohibited).
- Write short paragraphs—one idea per sentence or pair.
- Check: did I answer only what was asked?
Level-based marking (AQA style)
Some questions use levels (basic → developed → comprehensive). You need breadth and detail:
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| “Vaccines help immunity” | “Vaccine contains antigens → stimulates memory cells → faster secondary response → fewer infected hosts” |
Common losses
- Bullet list with no links between points
- Repeating the same idea in different words
- Wrong topic revision dumped on the page
- Missing population-level link when the question says “spread in a population”
FAQ
How long should a 6-mark answer be?
Often 6–10 sentences of focused science—quality over half a page.
Are 6-mark questions only on Higher?
Mostly on Higher for AQA Separate; Combined may use shorter extended questions—check Trilogy guide.
