Pearson Edexcel International A-Level Most Common Mistakes: What Examiner Reports Say

Why examiner reports matter

Pearson Edexcel publishes Principal Examiner Feedback (PEF) reports for International Advanced Level (IAL) qualifications. They identify common candidate errors, misconceptions and exam technique issues. The same patterns appear repeatedly—students who learn from them can avoid losing marks.

Cross-subject mistakes (all Edexcel International A-level)

1. Levels-based marking

Extended questions use levels of response descriptors. Candidates often write at a lower level—missing final appropriate comments for “deduce”, “evaluate”, “assess”.

Fix: Deduce = conclusion from evidence. Evaluate = strengths and limitations + conclusion. Assess = weigh up + judgement.

2. Not using the resource

When data or extracts are provided, answers must use that information. Copying without analysis prevents access to analysis marks.

Fix: Reference specific data. “The extract shows…”, “According to the graph…” Analyse, don’t just copy.

3. Incomplete definitions

Definitions must include all required terminology. Omitting key words (e.g. “gaseous”, “one mole”) costs marks.

Fix: Learn definitions precisely. Include essential terms.

4. Units and precision

Wrong or missing units; incorrect significant figures. Omitting minus signs in final answers.

Fix: Include units. Check required precision. Signs matter (e.g. enthalpy).

5. Misreading questions

Not reading questions carefully to account for all relevant information. Answering a different question.

Fix: Re-read. Underline key words. Check what is asked.
