Edexcel International A-Level English Language: Most Common Mistakes from Examiner Reports
Edexcel International A-Level English Language: Frequent mistakes
Pearson Edexcel International A-level English Language shares many common error patterns with Cambridge and other boards. Principal Examiner Feedback emphasises analysis, evidence, structure and command words.
Analysis and evidence
Unsupported claims
Identifying language or structural features that aren’t present, or failing to provide specific examples to support identifications.
Fix: Quote precisely. Feature must be in the text. Quote + identify + effect.
Weak connections to effect
Failing to make clear connections between identified features and their contribution to meaning or effect. Generic comments (“makes it interesting”) without explanation.
Fix: “The writer uses X to create Y effect because…” Link explicitly to purpose and audience.
Describing instead of analysing
Retelling or describing content instead of analysing how language and structure create effects.
Fix: Analyse methods. How does the writer achieve this? What techniques? What effect?
Structure and development
Levels-based responses
Extended questions use levels of response. Level 1: identification. Level 2: analysis. Level 3: evaluation. Candidates often write at lower levels.
Fix: Address each level. Develop analysis. Conclude with judgement where required.
Planning
Many candidates don’t plan longer responses. Result: repetition, unclear structure, incomplete development.
Fix: Plan briefly. Bullet points. Logical order. Then write.
Command words
Evaluate vs. describe vs. analyse
Confusing response types. Evaluate = judge with evidence. Describe = what/how. Analyse = how and why.
Fix: Match response to command. Check mark scheme for expected depth.
Technical accuracy
Spelling, punctuation and grammar at A-level standard. Errors can limit marks for AO1 (technical accuracy).
Fix: Proofread. Check tense. Use correct terminology.
