A Level Maths Past Papers: Mark Schemes & Method Marks
Completing A Level Maths past papers without proper mark scheme review rarely raises grades. Examiners award method marks when your approach is correct even if the final number is wrong—many students mark themselves too harshly or too leniently.
Start with the past papers hub for where to download papers. This article is how to mark.
Mark types you will see
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| M | Method — valid setup or progression |
| A | Accuracy — correct result from correct method |
| B | Independent — often a quoted value or graph feature |
| DM | Dependent method — needs earlier M |
| FT | Follow through — error carried forward |
Cambridge 9709 and Edexcel 9MA0 both emphasise clear working; “answer only” often scores zero on longer questions.
Six-step self-marking routine
- Do not open the scheme while solving.
- Mark question by question with official scheme only.
- Write M1, A1 in the margin for every mark awarded.
- Classify errors: arithmetic vs method vs time vs “show that”.
- Redo one lost-marks question cleanly next day.
- Read the examiner report for that series — examiner reports guide.
Log marks by topic (integration, trig, mechanics, stats) across three papers to see patterns.
Command words and marks
- Show that / Prove — work forward from definitions; do not rearrange the given result first.
- Hence — use the previous part; alternative methods may score little.
- Write down — minimal working expected.
Edexcel command words · Cambridge common mistakes.
Example: method marks still count
Differentiate (y = x^3 - 4x) at (x = 2):
- M1 for attempting derivative
- A1 for (3x^2 - 4)
- M1 for substitution
- A1 for gradient 8
Wrong substitution might still keep three marks. Mark line-by-line, not “wrong answer = 0”.
Cambridge vs Edexcel marking habits
| Cambridge 9709 | Edexcel 9MA0 | |
|---|---|---|
| Paper feel | Shorter applied papers + pure | Long 2 h papers |
| Working | Must be visible | Method marks stressed in reports |
| Booklet | MF19 — know contents | Board booklet — do not memorise given formulae |
