📄 Leaflet & Flyer Writing — the format

Get a passer-by to act, using layout as much as words.

Writing for: Someone who picked it up and will give it fifteen seconds.

Register: Semi-formal

Length: Usually 200–350 words. Layout markers count towards the format mark.

The format, in order

    Title

    Large, benefit-led, not just the subject.

    GET FIT WITHOUT LEAVING SCHOOL

  2. 2

    Sub-heading

    One line expanding the offer.

  3. 3

    Short sections with sub-headings

    Two or three, each with its own sub-heading. Indicate them clearly in your answer.

    Bullet points

    Use them for practical detail — times, prices, what to bring.

  5. 5

    Call to action

    What to do next, with how and by when.

    Sign up at the sports office before Friday 21 March.

What the marks are for

Content

  • ✓All information a reader needs to act
  • ✓Benefit-led rather than feature-led
  • ✓Audience from the task clearly in view
  • ✓A specific call to action

Language

  • ✓Clear layout features — headings, sub-headings, bullets
  • ✓Concise, direct sentences
  • ✓Direct address to the reader
  • ✓Persuasive but not overblown

What loses marks

  • ✗Writing continuous prose with no layout features, losing the format mark
  • ✗A title that labels rather than sells
  • ✗Leaving out the practical detail a reader needs to act
  • ✗No call to action
  • ✗Over-the-top sales language that undermines credibility
