(a) Construct the cumulative frequency table.
(b) Estimate the median.
(c) Estimate the interquartile range.
- 1
(a) Add the frequencies as you go. Each cumulative value belongs to the upper boundary of its class.
- 2
(b) With values the median is the th. Locate it: the CF passes between (CF ) and (CF ).
- 3
Interpolate: we need more values out of the in that class, across a class of width .
- 4
Evaluate.
- 5
(c) The lower quartile is the th value, which lies between CF (at ) and CF (at ).
- 6
The upper quartile is the th value, between CF (at ) and CF (at ).
- 7
Subtract for the interquartile range.
Answer
(a) CF: , , , , (b) Median marks (c) IQR marks
Examiner tip
The June 2025 examiner report described candidates "identifying that the quartiles related to the cumulative frequencies of 90 and 30 but then subtracting these to find 60". The interquartile range is the difference between the two marks , not between the cumulative frequencies . Cumulative frequency always belongs to the upper class boundary, never the midpoint. On an exam paper you would read these values from your curve, and a small tolerance is allowed, so a median reading of or would be accepted.
